Garden Volunteer

Time commitment 

 

Friday afternoons from 1pm-2.30pm

Volunteer hours must not exceed more than 16 hours per week.

Role Purpose

 

As an Eco Living Garden Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to meet other like-minded garden enthusiasts who share your interest in home gardening.

 

In this role, you’ll be able to work with other keen gardeners on maintaining the sustainable features of our unique display garden, which include:

  • waterwise native garden beds
  • bush foods
  • kitchen-garden
  • composting systems.

 

You may also occasionally speak to members of the public about these features, as well as backyard planning for biodiversity, external shade and water sensitive urban design.

 

Skills & Key Duties

 

Essential skills

  • People with experience and/or passion for growing food and/or domestic gardening.
  • People who are comfortable in working in outdoor environments.
  • Able to kneel and stand for extended periods, move and bend safely to complete the tasks.
  • Can follow instructions from a staff member.

Desirable skills

  • Clear communicators who build a positive team culture
  • Ability to follow the safe guidelines of commonly used  hazardous materials (compost, potting mix and some household chemicals).

Key Duties & responsibilities

  • Planning and tending to the Eco Living vegetable garden.
  • Maintaining fruit tree health, weed suppression & pruning as needed.
  • Support other volunteers and ask for support when needed.
  • Arriving on time and remaining professional in your interactions with all stakeholders.
  • Providing a quality service to community members with a high degree of confidentiality.

 

 

General Responsibilities

 

Work Health & Safety

  • Create, maintain and foster a safe work environment.
  • Ensure all potential hazards, accidents and incidents are identified and appropriately notified.
  • Consideration of the safety of the general public during operations.
  • Use of appropriate safety equipment and PPE as specified by your supervisor.
  • Comply with relevant Shire policies and procedures including Child Safety & Wellbeing Policy, Manual Handling Policy, Exposure to environmental extremes policy, Safety and Wellbeing policy, Sun smart UV policy, Workplace behaviour bullying and harassment policy, Exposure to environmental extremes policy.

Compliance & Training requirements 

 

Successful volunteers are required to obtain a Working with Children check and a Police check prior to commencing.

 

All new Volunteers will be required to complete:

  • - Shire Induction
  • - Onsite induction
  • - Child Safe Training
  • - Ongoing “On the job” training
  • - Attendance at volunteer meetings as required.
