Tidbinbilla: Nature Play – Introduction to bushwalking for kids

Where children can enjoy our play spaces rich in nature-based, open-ended experiences that give children, families and communities an opportunity to connect with nature and each other. Helping them replace “screen time” with “green time” and reconnect with nature.

This is an opportunity to take a guided walk through our beautiful bushland on the Congwarra track here at Tidbinbilla and learn a few basic bushwalking skills as we go. This activity is NOT suitable for strollers or prams.

The walk is 3.1 km in length on a formed bush track. It is mostly flat but there are some small hills to challenge us and the track is rocky in places – there’s plenty to see and we will explore being safe and comfortable in the bush. We will take turns being the leader, carrying the map and setting the pace. Along the way we’ll take water breaks and sit down for a snack.

Before we begin walking, we will discuss the importance of carrying water, wearing a hat and comfortable clothes, wearing sunscreen, and considering the weather.  We will also look at a map and see where our walk will take us.

There is an opportunity to shorten the walk if the distance proves a little too challenging.

Recommended for 6-11 years of age.

Shift Information

This activity is suitable for all fitness levels with minimal lifting, setup and pack up required. You will need to enjoy and have patience when working with young children and their families.

Days: One day during each school holidays.

Time: Winter and Spring school holiday - 10:00am (1 hour included for setup)

Summer and Autumn school holidays - 9:00am (1 hour included for setup)

The shift runs for approximately 3hours including setup and pack up.

If you would like to volunteer on the day, but cannot attend for the full shift, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator who can facilitate.
