Online charity shop Volunteer – Streatham and St Paul’s Cray

At St Christopher’s we put people at the heart of everything we do. We believe that all dying people and those close to them deserve to have the best care and support, wherever and whenever they need it. We do all we can to make this happen, providing physical, emotional and spiritual support to over 7,500 people across south east London every year. People like you, your mum, your dad, your nan, your sister, your friend, your neighbour.


Why we need your help

We are lucky enough to receive an abundance of high quality donations of clothes, toys, homeware, media and accessories that can be listed and sold through our on line shops

Donations raised from our online shop sales (mainly eBay) are reaching around £10k per month, bringing in vital income at this challenging time. We want to build and expand on this fantastic work, and try innovative ways to grow this area. We would like a team of volunteers to help us to achieve this.


What time should you offer?

We can be flexible on how much time you offer and we can discuss this in a short informal interview when you apply.

You may be able to offer us one day or a few hours every week or you may be able to help us once a fortnight.


Opportunities to help at the weekend is available however, you will need to attend a short briefing session on a mutually suitable weekday

What activities will you be involved in as part of this volunteer role?

Please note you can do all or some of the below activities depending on your preference and the needs of the Online Retail Manager:


  • Sorting through donated stock such as clothes, homeware, children’s toys etc.
  • Research the donated items, using the internet, so we can decide best price to list them on eBay and raise as much money as possible.
  • Take photos of the items and list them on eBay
  • Answer questions from the public
  • package up items ready to be posted

Training and support provided

  • Basic manual handling and fire safety briefing will be provided on your first day.
  • A Learning Workbook which provided you with knowledge on safeguarding, health and safety, and other essential learning.
  • Day to day support and ‘on-the-job’ training from the Online Retail Manager
  • Volunteer handbook


What we are looking for

  • Ability to follow our policies and procedures to keep you, our staff, our patients and our customers safe
  • Ability to represent St Christopher’s and our values positively
  • Comfortable with the physical activity required in sorting through large amounts of donated items (we can provide you with a chair so you don’t have to stand if required)
  • Can follow direction and guidance and work independently
  • For those who wish to list items online, confidence with using the internet and online ‘shops’ such as eBay

There is a short settling in period to see if the role is right for you

You must be 16 years old or over to do this role

This role will require the following pre-volunteering checks:

At St Christopher’s we believe that no volunteer should be out of pocket

because of their volunteering. The reimbursement of reasonable out of pocket

expenses incurred whilst volunteering will help ensure volunteering is

accessible to all. All expenses to be reclaimed should be agreed with the

manager/supervisor or the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator in advance.
