St Paul’s Cray Shop Retail Volunteer

At St Christopher’s we put people at the heart of everything we do. We believe that all dying people and those close to them deserve to have the best care and support, wherever and whenever they need it. We do all we can to make this happen, providing physical, emotional and spiritual support to over 7,500 people across south east London every year. People like you, your mum, your dad, your nan, your sister, your friend, your neighbour.

 

Why we need your help

Are you passionate about pre-loved clothes, furniture and accessories? Then join our retail team in our shop at St Paul’s Cray and help raise around £1 million for St Christopher's each year.

 

 

What time should you offer?

We’d like your help with one shift a week but we’d love it if you could do more! Our shifts vary; they can be between 3-7 hours long and timings can be agreed between the volunteer and shop manager.

 You will be based at our shop in St Paul’s Cray 85-89 Cotmandene Crescent, St Pauls Cray, BR5 2RA   020 8300 1079

 

 

What activities will you be involved in as part of this volunteer role?

  • Our St Paul’s Cray shop specializes in furniture donations so you would be involved in sorting and displaying items of furniture as well as other kinds of donations
  • To assist in keeping the sales floor well stocked
  • To sort, size and price donated items according to the shops’ policy
  • Taking money and registering purchases using the till.
  • To undertake banking and till reconciliations if required
  • To deal sensitively and politely with customers to the shop – bearing in mind some may be bereaved.
  • To sensitively accept donations from the public which may be either goods for sale or money - bearing in mind some may be bereaved.
  • Undertake activities which relate to keeping the shop clean and tidy e.g. vacuuming
  • Representing St Christopher’s and our values at all times during your shift

Training and support provided

  • Welcome session and ongoing support provided by shop manager
  • All training will take place in the shop
  • A health and safety briefing will be provided on your first day.
  • You will need to read and complete a learning workbook which needs to be refreshed each year to continue volunteering in this role.
  • Gift Aid training
  • Training on use of the till, back office PC, tagging gun and steamer where needed.

  • Good listener and clear communicator
  • Good attention to detail
  • Ability to follow our policies and procedures to keep you, and our customers and staff safe
  • Ability to represent St Christopher’s and our values positively
  • If you are able to assist with safely moving and displaying furniture this will really help us

 

 

Anything else you need to know

How to apply - We ask all those interested to complete a taster session in the shop in the first instance. Please call or pop in to speak to the manager and arrange this.

  • The volunteer role will be agreed with you following successful completion of the taster, completed application form and references.
  • There is a short settling in period to see if the role is right for you
  •  You must be 16 years old or over to do this role
  •  Having a criminal conviction will not necessarily prevent you from volunteering
  • with us. We assess each situation on an individual basis
  • At St Christopher’s we believe that no volunteer should be out of pocket

because of their volunteering. The reimbursement of reasonable out of pocket

expenses incurred whilst volunteering will help ensure volunteering is

accessible to all. All expenses to be reclaimed should be agreed with the

manager/supervisor or the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator in advance.
