Volunteers play a key role in advancing our mission to inspire an appreciation for the beauty and value of native plants and a commitment to protect the habitats that sustain them. Volunteer service provides opportunities to get outdoors, meet new friends, and make a difference through meaningful activities - planting trees, removing invasives, maintaining trails, gardening, and more.

Volunteer Opportunities

Garden Ambassadors

Mt. Cuba Center is a botanic garden located in Hockessin, Delaware that is committed to providing remarkable experiences to our guests. Volunteer ambassadors help deliver this experience by roaming our natural lands trails or lush formal and naturalistic gardens to welcome and chat with guests, as well as provide directions and general assistance.

We are looking for individuals with a friendly, outgoing manner and strong communication skills. Ambassadors should enjoy spending time outdoors and must be able to stand for extended periods and walk over rugged terrain. Knowledge of, or interest in, gardening and native plants is preferred.  Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply!

Ambassador shifts are between 3 to 3.5 hours long on during our April to November visitation season and are scheduled as follows: 9:30 am to 1:00 pm, 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm, and 3:30 pm to 6:15 pm. Ambassadors commit to 6-14 hours per month.

Mt. Cuba Center history, horticulture, and guest safety training will be provided. 

Mt. Cuba & Community Science Opportunities

Join Mt. Cuba volunteers and staff to collect data to contribute to ongoing scientific research such as:

  • Pollinator use of Trial Garden Plants - Work in the trial gardens to monitor pollinator use of a variety of plants undergoing surveys. 
  • Bluebird nesting at Mt. Cuba - Help monitor bluebird box usage at Mt. Cuba. 

Community Outreach

Work with Mt. Cuba volunteers and staff to engage & inspire our local community to learn more about native plants & Mt. Cuba. Some volunteer teams working on community outreach include:

  • Growing Together - Work with nearby landowners to help educate them about native plants and assist them in creating a native plant garden plan for their property. 

Education Support

Help support Mt. Cuba staff & outside experts on educational classes, programs and more! 

Garden Opportunities

Work with Mt. Cuba staff and volunteers to support & maintain our gardens and naturalistic areas! From general horticultural work to specific garden support there's always work to be done throughout Mt. Cuba. Some garden volunteer teams include:

  • Garden Warriors - Work group focusing on a specific garden task each week
  • General Garden Support
  • Gladiators - Weekly working group in the glade
  • Moss Masters - Weekly working group along the moss bank

Greenhouse Support

Work with Mt. Cuba staff and volunteers to help support plant propagation, seedling growth, and general greenhouse maintenance. 

Marketing, Membership & Guest Experiences Opportunities

Work with Mt. Cuba staff and volunteers to ensure everyone's visit to the center is magical and memorable. If you enjoy meeting new people, talking to visitors & espousing the benefits of native plants and Mt. Cuba these opportunities are for you! 

Research & Library Support

Work with Mt. Cuba staff & volunteers on data entry, database management & organizing records. Projects include historical plant data entry, Mt. Cuba conservation data entry and management & Trial Garden data entry & management.
