FOOD BANK RESPONSE TO COVID-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the COVID-19 situation a Global Pandemic. We take this situation very seriously with our top priority being the safety of our staff, volunteers and clients.

In the effort to stem the spread of Covid-19, it is imperative that you read and comply with the following:

  • If you are feeling ill, we require you to stay at home until you are feeling better.
    • Please take extra precautionary measures during this time.
    • If you have flu-like symptoms and need more information or health guidance, call Health Link at 811 for assistance. Do not go to clinics, doctor’s offices or hospitals unless directed by Health Link.
  • If you are at the Food Bank, increase your hygiene.
    • Sanitize your hands when you enter the building.
    • No handshakes. No fist pumps. No hugs.
    • Wash your hands properly and frequently (for at least 20 seconds) and use the hand sanitizer provided.
    • Sanitize your workspace regularly.
    • Avoid touching your face and sneeze/cough into your sleeve.
  • If you have been travelling outside Canada, please contact 811 when you return home, even if you have no symptoms.
    • Contact our Executive Director and update her on your status.
    • You may not return to your duties until you have been medically cleared.
    • Monitor your symptoms for cough and fever. If you feel ill after returning, were in a health care facility in an affected country, self isolate yourself and call 811.
  • If you or members of your household are planning future travel, whether domestic or international, please advise our Executive Director.
    • If this travel proceeds, be prepared for self-isolation upon your return if required.
    • You may not return to your duties until you have been medically cleared.

What you can expect from us:

  • Additional sanitizing materials throughout the building.
  • Increased cleaning throughout the building.
  • We continue to communicate and demonstrate best hygiene practices to all.
  • We are reviewing client service options to ensure we continue to provide a comfortable hamper pick up experience.

Volunteer Opportunities

Administrative (Office Volunteer / Reception)

Create a positive Food Bank experience for our clients by answering phones and greeting the public during program or drop in times. Administrative volunteers also book appointments, meet with clients and update client files accordingly.

Warehouse Volunteer (Sorting/Shelving/Repackaging)

The Food Bank runs on donations and our warehouse volunteers are constantly sorting and shelving these donations. Demands are greater with large food drives where we post casual warehouse opportunities but we also have volunteers come in on a weekly basis to keep the shelves stocked. Warehouse volunteers also create Hampers for our clients, taking care to customize according to the dietary needs of family members.

Transportation Volunteer (Picking up Donations / Delivering hampers)

Love being behind the wheel? Volunteer as one of our drivers picking up food donations from community partners and delivering them to the Food Bank. Drivers also deliver Meals on Wheels orders and deliver Snack Attack packages to the schools.

Valid driver's license and car insurance required or ability to be insured to use the Food Bank Van.

Casual / Special Events Volunteer

All hands on deck! Casual volunteers help with food drives and special events. These energetic volunteers help behind-the-scenes at various events to raise awareness of food insecurity in our community. Although we have temporarily suspended all public events to comply with public health measures, you can still add your name to the list for when we can get out into out community.

School Programs

These volunteers help ensure that no child in Chestermere goes hungry. We have valuable programs at all the local schools such as After the Bell and the Snack Attack to provide students with the nourishment they need to focus on school. We have also taken over the Backpack Program to provide Backpacks to children in need.

Board of Directors

We are currently looking to fill the following vacancies on our Board of Directors:

  • Director, Grants and Funding
  • Director
  • Secretary

Shopping Volunteer

Love to shop? These volunteers communicate with our Hamper Volunteers to determine what food is required, shop for perishables and deliver food to the food bank. They watch for sales at local grocery stores and shop strategically to maximize purchases.

Community Garden Volunteers

Community Garden volunteers act as part of a team to plant, maintain, weed and harvest the Food Bank's 3 urban plots and 1 rural plot. This is a seasonal volunteer opportunity.

Good Food Box Volunteers

The Good Food Box makes top-quality, fresh food available in a way that does not stigmatize people, fosters community development, and promotes healthy eating. Volunteers monitor collection of Good Food Boxes once a month.
