Child Care and Family Development - Durham Region


The YMCA is the largest not-for-profit child care provider in Canada. With over 50 years of experience and hundreds of licensed programs throughout the Greater Toronto Area, the Y offers high-quality child care programs for infants, toddlers, preschool and school-aged children. Our highly trained Registered Early Childhood Educators partner with parents to support each child’s development and provide families with the security of knowing their child is in a safe and nurturing environment during these formative years.

At the YMCA, we understand that children learn through play. Our YMCA Playing to Learn™ curriculum offers children an opportunity to:

  • Develop confidence, self-direction and self-regulation
  • Use play as the primary learning medium
  • Learn literacy, numeracy, arts, science, and more
  • Build the skills necessary for a smooth transition into primary school.

For College / University Student Placements

There is a separate volunteer application process for post-secondary/college student placements. All post-secondary students interested in Child Care, Early-ON or Before and After School programs must complete the placement student application here. Please note we have limited opportunities and completing an application does not guarantee a placement. A YMCA employee will contact you only if they can accommodate your request.

General Interests

Play Partners

Volunteers and students in child care work under the guidance of ECE staff to engage children in fun and age appropriate activities in our full day child care or Before and After School programs. They act as role models and ensure the safeguarding of children and youth.

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum time commitment three months
  • Weekly time commitment varies by centre

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 13
  • Successful applicants 18 years of age or older will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
  • Completion of Health Assessment and Immunization Records required.
  • First Aid and CPR Level C an asset.
  • Strong communication skills, teamwork and flexibility.
  • A general understanding of child development.
  • Adherence to YMCA A Place to Connect guidelines, Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) and YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Ability to engage children in a variety of activities.
  • Responsibility, reliability and commitment to their role.
