Skills College - 2026 Burn Area Safety & Maintenance
During this full day course:
1. Students will learn principles of fire behavior and how this informs trail crew planning
and in-field decision-making.
2. Students will learn about safety considerations that are specific to working in burned
forests, and ways that risk can be mitigated.
3. Students will learn how fire affects trails, including soils, understory, canopy and
infrastructure. We will tour a recently burned trail and identify and discuss findings.
4. The afternoon will be spent doing hands-on restoration of a section of burned trail. We
will discuss and/or actively participate in locating the original trail alignment, clearing
large debris, brushing, restoring tread and identifying areas of special concern.
Class size limited to 12 students.
