Skills College - 2026 Archaeology in the Upper McKenzie Presentation: Living In This Land, On Foot, By Hand
The human story in the Upper McKenzie River Valley spans some 13,000 to 15,000 years, and maybe longer. During that time, an alpine ice cap hundreds of feet thick melted away, its immense glacial outgrowths retreating to the tallest peaks. In place of the ice, volcanic eruptions birthed mountains, cinder fields, and lava flows that crossed rivers creating thunderous falls and ephemeral lakes. Forests expanded to blanket all but the loftiest heights. And humans prospered, even though, until European contact, they did everything on foot and by hand. In this class, participants will learn what Archaeology has thus far revealed about the footbound, handmade life in the Upper McKenzie. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice cordage making from locally available materials as a way to personally experience a bit of that life.
