The University is currently experiencing a large increase of neurological conditions such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism, and Specific Learning Disabilities (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia). Research has indicated that one of the primary factors of retaining neurodivergent students is by providing them with mentoring and coaching to support their transition into university.
This group of volunteer mentors will provide support for primarily first year and second year neurodivergent students. The NVPM mentors will become key contacts for their neurodivergent mentees. The NVPM mentors will meet their mentees for a minimum of four meetings, but mentees can request up to six meetings in total over the duration of the program.
The NVPMs will become a key contact for the mentee and refer their mentee to resources, direction to key services, and introductions to the university community. The NVPM will also assist the Volunteer Coordinator where appropriate with program events and raising awareness of neurodivergent conditions on campus.
