Nature: practical activities - BeeWalk training for pollinator surveying (Tees-Swale)

This free one-day course is for beginner’s and those with experience to learn about the identification of all 24 British bumblebees alongside an update on the national BeeWalk scheme and the methodology required to carry out surveys.

The training is for volunteers willing to undertake BeeWalk surveys bi-weekly between May – September, in line with the Bumblebee Conservation Trusts initiative - https://www.bumblebeeconservation.org/beewalk/

The walks will be about 1-2km encompassing a variety of habitats, including a selection of upland hay meadows that have been restored through seed addition, woodland, road side verges etc. Walks can be undertaken in pre-organised groups, or individuals can go out and walk their specified BeeWalk within their own time. The aim is to monitor a selection of meadows pre and post restoration to see the impact upon pollinator abundance, whilst also adding vital data to a countrywide programme run by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

The training, with Andy Benson, Skills for BeeWalk project manager at the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, will take place at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning followed by an afternoon outdoor field identification session.
