SSUPER - Senior SUPport in the ER

Purpose: 

  • To improve the quality of the older patient’s and family’s experience in our Emergency Department including Emergency inpatients.
  • To address the known causes of delirium: poor nutrition and hydration, lack of stimulation, poor orientation, decreased mobility and deconditioning
  • To provide an extra set of hands to perform the many activities that support older people in the ED when appropriate, such as; getting coffee/tea, reading materials providing stimulation, making phone calls; distracting from pain and/or anxiety
  • To provide emotional support and other types of nonclinical support to isolated seniors unaccompanied by family or friends in the ED
  • Improve the patient, family and team experience in the ED.
  • To assist with appropriate exercises/stretches when appropriate and as directed by the ED OT/PT

  • This is a position for a SUPER volunteer
  • Mature compassionate person with demonstrated success as a volunteer
  • Willingness and ability to be pro-active
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and leadership skill willingness to follow instructions and take initiative
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with minimal guidance and support
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations
  • Physical ability to walk around department and hospital as needed
  • Clear understanding of job scope and responsibilities
  • Able to commit to a minimum of one 3 hour shift per week for at least 1 year
  • Shift times are 11am to 2pm, 2pm to 5pm and 5pm to 8pm Monday through Sunday
  • The training for this program consists of two half days onsite training session
