GOSH Guide

 

Summary

The main purpose of this post is to establish a friendly, helpful and effective welcome to patients and visitors to GOSH and to provide a general guiding and wayfinding service. Under the guidance of the Volunteer Coordinator and supported by your team leader, you will ensure that all visitors to the hospital are met with a welcoming face and given clear directions and understanding of where their appointments are, walking with them to their destination, as far as possible.

 

Time Commitment:

Minimum of 4 hours per week for 6 months. The service runs from 8am till 6pm Monday to Friday

 

Location:

Main reception areas and across Trust

 

Responsible to: Team Leader

Uniform:

  • Volunteer polo-shirt or tabard to worn at all times whilst on Trust premises
  • Name badge

 Intended Impact of role

  • Reduction of anxiety for patients and parents entering hospital
  • Saving clinical staff time by ensuring patients get to their intended appointments on time
  • Improved patient/visitor flow
  • Supporting reception and security staff teams

 

Specific tasks for this role:

  • Acting as a contact point, welcoming people in main reception
  • Providing clear and accurate information to help people find their way around the hospital
  • Escorting enquirers to specific areas as appropriate
  • Inviting visitors to observe Trust Infection Control procedures
  • Providing information on local amenities, such as public transport cafes, shops etc.
  • Answering general enquiries about the hospital and its services
  • Referring enquirers to appropriate members of staff where further help is required
  • Ensuring people with disabilities are attended to appropriately

 

Costume character

Summary

As part of the wider entertainment team, this role is to provide quality costume character entertainment for patients and families in GOSH. The performer must have experience or dancing and/or acting to be able to perform within one of our costume characters or superhero characters. The character will be accompanied by a trained ‘chaperone’ whose role is to escort characters and be the liaison between participant and character.

 

The character will have set wards and hospital areas to perform in and abide strictly to the character’s personality and behaviours (this information is provided separately).

 

Time Commitment:

Approx 4 hour session, with appropriate breaks. Full week, according to need and set timetable.

 

Location:  Across the Trust

 

Key Tasks:

  • To be guided by requests for the character – Outpatients, wards, reception area, special events
  • To learn and practice the character’s personality and behaviours, performing as the character at all times when in costume
  • To undertake all tasks according to the Rules and Guidelines of GOSH Costume Characters
  • Alert GOSH staff to any issues of concern

  

 Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experienced performer – dancer or actor
  • Experience of working with young people/children (including babysitting, volunteering)
  • Creative and play skills
  • Emotionally mature
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Understanding of (ability to learn) personal/professional boundaries

Therapy Dog Volunteer

Summary

Under the guidance of Volunteer Services staff and in partnership with play specialists, the Therapy Dog volunteer will provide an opportunity for patients and families to meet a registered PAT dog and to engage in one to one contact in a safe environment. 

 

Time Commitment:

To be negotiated with Volunteer Services and GOSH staff

 

Location: Trust wide

 

Responsible to: Recruitment and Projects Officer

 

Uniform:

  • Volunteer polo-shirt or tabard to be worn at all times whilst on Trust premises
  • Name badge
  • ID security badge
  • Comfortable and respectable clothes and shoes
  • Minimal jewellery and make up  

 

Key Tasks:

  • To be guided by the play specialist and senior ward staff on appropriate activities for patients and their siblings
  • Helping to maintain a clean safe environment
  • Alerts Play Workers/Specialists to any issues of concern
  • Welcomes any patients/visitors
  • Provide bedside play activities and support where necessary

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • PAT Dog Charity registered
  • Pet to be insured (Through PAT Charity) and up to date with all required vaccinations, etc
  • Experience of working with young people/children
  • Listening skills
  • Sensitive and tactful nature
  • Emotionally mature
  • Understanding of loss and bereavement issues
  • Compassion
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Understanding of (ability to learn) personal/professional boundaries

Weekend Club

Summary

Under the guidance of the GOSH staff the volunteer provides basic and diversionary play activities for patients and their siblings in the Activity Centre and on the ward - ensuring that the highest standards of play care are available for the children. Play offers an opportunity for patients and families to engage in developmentally appropriate activities, while providing an opportunity for socialisation. Play allows freedom of choice, fosters creativity, diverts patients from stress and worry, and normalizes their environment. Weekend Activities Club volunteers provide a mix of fun arts and crafts, games and sports to patients and siblings.

 

Time Commitment:

Minimum 5 hour session per fortnight for 6 months. Between midday and 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

 

Location: Trust wide

 

Responsible to: Volunteer Services Staff

 

Uniform:

  • Volunteer polo-shirt or tabard to be worn at all times whilst on Trust premises
  • Name badge
  • ID security badge
  • Comfortable and respectable clothes and shoes
  • Minimal jewellery and make up

 

Key Tasks:

  • To be guided by the GOSH staff member on appropriate play activities for patients and their siblings
  • Helping to maintain a clean safe environment in which children can play
  • Setting up and tidying/cleaning/locking away toys and equipment
  • Monitor Activity Centre environment and all visitors ensuring appropriate usage of equipment
  • Supervises, instructs, encourages and interacts with patients/siblings as they participate in play
  • Alerts GOSH staff to any issues of concern
  • Welcomes any patients/visitors to Activity Centre
  • Provide bedside play activities and support where necessary
