Sports Instructor Volunteer – Skating and Sports

Role

The Community Services Department is implementing child and youth programs assisted by Volunteer Sports Instructors. Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation and Coordinator, Recreation, this part-time volunteer position is responsible for the class support for delivery of instructional activities and drills that are safe, fun and appropriate for the targeted age group.

Time Commitment

  • Various Hours; approximately 1 to 3 hours per shift

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist with coaching and sport education with a focus on quality customer service
  • Foster a welcoming, respectful and safe environment for all participants
  • Assist with set-up and teaching of skills and drills in adherence with lesson plans
  • As per Supervisor guidance, understand and ensure compliance of all established sport rules and guidelines governing the safety and conduct of participants
  • Establish positive relationships and clear communication channels with all participants
  • Maintain a safe and clean program space, including proper usage and storage of equipment. Communicate any deficiencies with Supervisor
  • Evaluate situations for potential risks and proactively take action to address such risks.  Communicate any action and/or concerns to Supervisor
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and handle sensitive situations with mature judgement
  • Provide suggestions to Coordinator, Recreation on ways to enhance the program and the customer experience
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the programming, standard operating guidelines as per the Corporate Volunteer Orientation and Training
  • Assist with maintaining program-related administration
  • Report any incidents, concerns or site damage to Supervisor
  • Attend and participate in mandatory training functions

 

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Must be 14 years of age or older
  • Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Screening for 18+)
  • Must meet requirements of the Town of Milton volunteer program
  • Knowledge and experience playing sport and/or teaching physical education
  • Standard First Aid and CPR an asset
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development, an asset
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities, an asset
  • Punctual, consistent, reliable
