Volunteer for Recreation and Culture Programs


Fill-out an application for Recreation and Culture Programs if you are interested in volunteering with children and youth, fitness, sports and arts programs throughout the year including PA Days, March Break and Summer Camps. You must be at least 14 or 15 years old to apply for most of these program placements. 

Application Due Dates: Applications are accepted throughout the year for a variety of positions as they become available.

  • For March Break Camps, applications submitted by the second week of January, will be reviewed. 
  • For Summer Camps, applications submitted by by the first week of May, will be reviewed.

Assets to Volunteer in Recreation and Culture Programs: Volunteer applicants interested in developing recreation leadership skills may wish to take HIGH FIVE ® and/or Leader in Training 1 and 2. While these courses are an asset to volunteering for Recreation and Culture programs, they are not required.

  • Leadership in Training 1 and 2 are offered periodically by the Town of Milton. Those interested can check this link prior to March Break and summer; then keyword search for "Leader in Training", and register as available.

Please note, summer camp-related positions tend to be posted in the fall of each year in preparation for the following summer session.

General Interests

After School Club Program Volunteer

Role

To assist staff in the delivery of the After School Club Program.

 

Time Commitment

  • Must commit to the program for at least 1 day a week (ideally for 8-weeks or more)
  • Each shift is 2 hours

 

Responsibilities

  • Follow all policies and procedures
  • Assist staff with the delivery of lesson plans and additional support to the program
  • Assist with providing a safe and well-supervised learning environment
  • Assist with set up and tear down of required equipment
  • Assist with preparing and serving snacks
  • Assist with the provision of a welcoming and positive atmosphere for children to actively   
      participate, excel and make friends
  • Interact with participants

Camp/School Breaks Program Volunteer

Role

To assist staff in the delivery of Camp/School Break programs and services.

 

Time Commitment

  • For Camps (March Break/Summer):
    • Minimum commitment is one week of camp (21-40 hours), usually 8:30am-4:30pm; 
        excludes field trip days.
    • Half-day volunteer opportunities are available upon discussion with the
        Coordinator, Recreation.
  • For School Breaks (PA Days):
    • Must commit to the program session duration (full-day), usually 8:30am-4:30pm.

 

Responsibilities

  • Follow all policies and procedures
  • Assist staff with the delivery of program plans and additional support to the program
  • Provide coverage for swim buddies (if applicable)
  • Assist with ensuring a safe and well-supervised camp environment
  • Assist with set-up and tear-down of required equipment
  • Provide assistance to the camp counsellors as required

 

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Must be 14 years of age or older
  • Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Screening for 18+)

  • Must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary educational institute

Sports Instructor Volunteer – Skating and Sports

Role

The Community Services Department is implementing child and youth programs assisted by Volunteer Sports Instructors. Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation and Coordinator, Recreation, this part-time volunteer position is responsible for the class support for delivery of instructional activities and drills that are safe, fun and appropriate for the targeted age group.

Time Commitment

  • Various Hours; approximately 1 to 3 hours per shift

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist with coaching and sport education with a focus on quality customer service
  • Foster a welcoming, respectful and safe environment for all participants
  • Assist with set-up and teaching of skills and drills in adherence with lesson plans
  • As per Supervisor guidance, understand and ensure compliance of all established sport rules and guidelines governing the safety and conduct of participants
  • Establish positive relationships and clear communication channels with all participants
  • Maintain a safe and clean program space, including proper usage and storage of equipment. Communicate any deficiencies with Supervisor
  • Evaluate situations for potential risks and proactively take action to address such risks.  Communicate any action and/or concerns to Supervisor
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and handle sensitive situations with mature judgement
  • Provide suggestions to Coordinator, Recreation on ways to enhance the program and the customer experience
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the programming, standard operating guidelines as per the Corporate Volunteer Orientation and Training
  • Assist with maintaining program-related administration
  • Report any incidents, concerns or site damage to Supervisor
  • Attend and participate in mandatory training functions

Arts Program Volunteer

Role

To provide assistance to program instructors in the delivery of programs.

 

Time Commitment

  • Must commit to the program session duration (1 day, or 4-12 weeks, varies by program)
  • Various Hours

 

Responsibilities

  • Follow all policies and procedures
  • Assist with material preparation
  • Assist with set up and tear down of required equipment
  • Assist program instructor with activities as needed: handing out supplies, filling out supply inventory sheets, taking attendance, ensuring spaces are kept clean and answering questions.
  • Maintain and clean art materials
  • Unpack and shelve supplies in stock room

 

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Must be 15 years of age or older
