Animal Fostering

 

If you're 19 or older and interested in making a meaningful impact through fostering, we’d love to invite you to apply - we hope you can support in any of the following ways:

 

  • You're able and willing to care for cats, kittens, small animals
  • You’re open to fostering animals needing behavior support (such as under-socialized cats)
  • This foster program does not include dogs.

 

Commitment:

  • You can commit to a minimum of 6 months (6 months available to receive foster requests. Foster placement and length depend on matching results and individual animal needs)

  • Please note that this role requires the completion of mandatory online training.

 

 

 

Grounds Maintenance Lead

 

  • Minimum Age: 19+

  • Commitment: Minimum 6‑month commitment; approx. once per week

  • Role Summary: Leads and supports the upkeep of clean, safe, and welcoming outdoor areas at the shelter, while coordinating tasks and assisting with volunteer guidance.

     

  • Key Tasks:

    • Perform and oversee light yard work: raking, sweeping, weeding, watering, general outdoor tidying

    • Operate and guide others in the safe use of a ride‑on lawn mower (training provided)

    • Help organize weekly maintenance priorities and support other grounds volunteers

    • Works independently and in small groups; moderate physical activity required

     

  • Important Notes:

    • This role does not include any animal care‑taking tasks

    • Mandatory online and onsite training must be completed before starting

    • May assist with orienting new grounds volunteers

  • Role Summary: Creates short, engaging video content that highlights animals, events, and daily shelter life to support the centre’s social media presence.

 

  • Key Tasks:
    • Visit the centre regularly to capture video footage of animals, activities, and behind‑the‑scenes moments

    • Film, edit, and prepare short‑form videos for social media platforms

    • Collaborate with staff to ensure content aligns with branding, messaging, and privacy guidelines - occasional meeting attendance is required

    • Works independently in a busy shelter environment; light to moderate physical activity may be required while filming.

    • Must follow all privacy, safety, and content‑approval procedures

 

 

 

 

Community Ambassador

 

  • Minimum Age: 16+
  • Commitment: Minimum 6‑month commitment
  • Availability: ideally on statutory holidays, weekends, and for community events in Surrey; monthly virtual meeting required
  • Role Summary: Represents the shelter at community events, helping build awareness, engagement, and support through positive public interactions.

 

  • Key Tasks:
    • Attend community events, outreach activities, and information booths in Surrey

    • Engage with the public, answer questions, and share key messages about shelter programs

    • Support event setup, teardown, and on‑site logistics as needed

    • Participate in monthly virtual team meetings

  • Skills & Qualities:
    • Strong communication and customer service skills

    • Comfortable speaking with diverse community members

    • Friendly, reliable, and able to represent the shelter professionally

    • This role does not include animal handling unless separately trained

BC SPCA Community Ambassador.  Ambassadors connect directly with the community at events such as farmers markets,  adoption fairs, food drives, and other local gatherings. The goal of this role is to raise  awareness about the organization's mission and the importance of animal care. As an  Ambassador, you'll be able to share your passion for animals by highlighting the needs and  issues facing cats, dogs, and other companion animals in your area, while inspiring others to  get involved.  Responsibilities  • Attend community events representing the BC SPCA and connecting with community members and  groups.  • Set up and take down booths at community events when needed.  • Document and take photographs during events.  • Assist with presentations in the community about BC SPCA programs and services and education on  animal care and welfare topics.  ' Distribute promotional material and information to local businesses and community groups.  • Increase community support for the BC SPCA through recruiting members of the community to become  volunteers, fosters, members and/or donors.  • Approach event participants to provide education, encourage conversation, and build positive  connections.  Requirements & Training  • 19 Years of age or older.  • Volunteer Application and Interview.  e Online orientation and on-the-job training provided.  • Flexible commitment with the expectation of attending a minimum of one (1) event per month.  • Ability to work independently or as part of a small team.  • Dependable and committed.  • Strong communication skills, previous training/facilitation experience an asset.  • Comfortable approaching people, asking questions, and initiating conversations.  • Proven success with building and maintaining effective relationships with external audiences.  • Philosophical harmony with our vision, mission, values, and strategic directions.  Volunteering Conditions  • Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them,  which requires patience and attention to detail.  ' Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as bites or scratches when assisting with adoption  events.  ' Weather Conditions: Outdoor tasks may require working in various weather conditions, including rain, or  heat. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared for seasonal changes.  ' Standing and Walking*: Many roles may involve long periods of standing or walking, particularly when  interacting with animals or the public. *Contact us about accommodations or modifications.  Time Commitment  • Events attended usually occur in the spring and summer and during weekends.  • Shifts may vary depending on the event and how many volunteers are available.
