Surveying

 

Main Activity:         

There are a number of regular and one off wildlife surveys volunteers help with on Exmoor, including otters, dormice, waxcap fungi, and some invasive species surveying.

Some surveys require a long term commitment to ensure continuity of data others can be undertaken over a few days.  If you are looking for very short term volunteering you may want to take a look at our wild watch pages where we have opportunities that can be done in just a few hours.

Time Commitment:

Wildlife Survey volunteers can get involved with a number of different surveys.  Some require long term commitment for training and having continuous data, but other projects can be undertaken in a shorter time span.

 

Duration

The project is ongoing.

 

Skills/Ability needed

  • To have a genuine interest and love for Exmoor wildlife
  • A basic knowledge of wildlife and a willingness to learn.
  • Some projects require the ability to walk long distances on rough terrain and accurately navigate , but others can be completed with you car window wound down or sitting under a hedge after a short walk. 
  • Enjoy being outdoors
  • Most surveys require you to be able to input the survey results online or using smart phone/tablet apps, training specific to each survey will be given.

 

What you need to bring

Equipment will vary depending on the survey, but as a guide a smartphone or tablet for recording is useful but it can all be done on paper and later input on a desktop computer.

Outdoor clothes appropriate to the weather conditions.

binoculars can also be useful

digital camera (phone camera is fine)
