Day Hospice Escort Volunteer

Role Summary: The Day Hospice at St Joseph’s Hospice gives people with a life-limiting condition the opportunity to spend an enjoyable, lively day with others in a similar condition, in a friendly and caring environment. We are seeking a volunteer to help patients who need assistance entering and exiting the ambulance using different mobility aids such as wheelchairs.

 

Key tasks: Under the supervision of the Day Services Manager, Staff Nurse, Health Care Assistant, and Domestic Staff:

 

  • Meet the driver and patients in the Day Hospice.
  • Assist in getting patients into the ambulance
  • Ensure seatbelts are worn at all times (unless the patient has a seat belt exemption from their GP). 
  • Assist the patient into their home if they are on wheelchairs/walking aides. 

 

Time requirement:

  • The day hospice requires 2 volunteer escorts: One for Tuesdays, and one for Wednesdays.
  • We need the escort to join us at 2:30pm and go out to bring our patients home from Day Hospice.  You will be back to the hospice around 4:30pm.
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months.

 

Skills and qualities required:

  • A friendly and caring personality.
  • Ability to talk and engage with people.
  • Dependable and reliable.

  • Wheelchair handling
