Drinks’ Trolley Host
The Drinks’ Trolley visits our wards twice a day to offer our patients free alcoholic & soft refreshments. It is a much loved service - run entirely by volunteers - who serve a choice of cold drinks and stop for a chat with patients, their families, and friends.
Key tasks include:
- Serving alcohol & soft drinks to all patients on the wards who request them
- Offering general help, support, and companionship to patients, visitors, and staff
- Reporting to the nurse in charge on each ward for relevant patient information
- Maintaining the highest standards of infection control & hand hygiene procedures
- Maintaining a log of consumed refreshments
- Ensuring that drinks in the fridge are replenished when necessary
- Advising on stock levels & drinks to order
- Returning drinks to the fridge and cleaning down the trolley surfaces
- Washing the measuring cup and ice bucket in the ward pantry
- Taking a proactive approach to the role, whilst always being guided by the Nurse in charge, and the wishes of the patient
Time requirements:
You need to allow 2 hours for a shift; it may take less but is important not to rush this role as it is an opportunity to offer companionship to patients and family members.
Currently available shifts:
- Alternating Sunday afternoons
Skills and qualities required:
- Able to work on own initiative, with a can do attitude
- Able to confidently communicate with a wide range of people at various levels
- Possessing the ability to set limits with others and be aware of professional boundaries
- An enthusiastic and passionate interest in hospice and end of life care
- Dress code should be smart and presentable
- Reliability and punctuality for your shift
This role requires you:
- To be 18+
- Able to supply the details of two referees
- Willing to apply for an Enhanced Adult DBS certificate with St. Joseph’s Hospice (unless you are subscribed to the Update Service)
- To accompany an experienced Drinks Trolley volunteer before starting, lasting 1 hour
- Attend a Core training day covering: Communication, Befriending & Boundaries/Grief, Loss & Dying/Safeguarding vulnerable adults/Health & safety in the workplace
