Zoo Commissary Volunteer (18+)
Summary
Commissary volunteers contribute to Zoo Boise’s conservation mission by performing duties related to animal care, such as preparing animal diets, under the supervision of an experienced zoo chef. While part of the animal care team, volunteers do not work directly with the animals.
Responsibilities
- Prepare daily meals and enrichment.
- Assist with inventory management of food and supplies.
- Keep the commissary clean and wash dishes, following USDA and AZA guidelines.
- Conduct animal observations.
Requirements
- 18+ years old
- Commitment to one shift per week for a minimum of 6 months.
- Daily 8:30AM - 12:00PM or 1:15 - 4:45PM
- Select shifts available based on current staffing.
- Morning shifts: Focus on food prep.
- Afternoon shifts: Some food prep but largely cleaning and inventory management.
- Select shifts available based on current staffing.
- Daily 8:30AM - 12:00PM or 1:15 - 4:45PM
- Complete approximately 5-hours of self-paced, online, onboarding modules.
- Attend a 3-hour in-person training session.
- Pay a $50 program fee.
- Financial assistance is available.
- Abide by all policies in volunteer handbook.
- Great customer service and ability to work well with visitors.
- Good physical condition and able to lift 50 pounds.
- Willing to get dirty.
- Must submit a negative TB test, at own expense, annually.
- Must be willing to submit to a federal background check if deemed necessary.
