St. John Hospice


Thank you for your interest in volunteering at St. John Hospice. Volunteers at our hospice must participate and successfully complete a standard 30 hours Palliative/Hospice care volunteer training prior to being assigned to the hospice.
 
Our 2024 volunteer training and onboarding cycle for our hospice & palliative care is now closed. We offer the Palliative/Hospice care training to our volunteers once a year and our next training week will take place on November 18th - 23rd, 2025.

Qualifications to volunteer at St. John Hospice:

  • Must have completed at least 4 months of volunteering at one of our Providence health Care sites 
  • Successful completion of the Hospice & Palliative Care Volunteer training program (we offer the opportunity to take the training with PHC once a year)
  • An interest to commit substantially to the care of the dying and supporting families that are grieving imminent loss of a loved one or at crisis
  • Experience visiting with patients or family in a hospital setting
  • Non-judgmental attitude
  • Mature, friendly, stable and dependable
  • Good listening and communication skills and being comfortable with silence
  • Understanding and adherence to the principles of confidentiality.
  • Experience with grief and/or significant loss
  • Last significant loss must be at least 1 year ago
  • Must be 21 years or older
 

In applying to be a St. John Hospice Volunteer, I confirm that:

  • I commit to volunteer a minimum of 1 year of volunteering
  • I consent to a criminal record check (Providence Health Care will provide web link required)
  • I am aware that volunteers are required to get an annual flu shot or wear a mask during flu season (December to April)
  • I am vaccinated with the COVID19 vaccine and will follow all the protocols in place onsite.
  • I consent to my references being contacted
  • I hereby certify that the information contained in this application is true 
  • I understand that completing this application process does not guarantee my acceptance as a volunteer

St. John Hospice is a 14-bed hospice with a home-like setting and 24-hour nursing care. It offers supportive end-of-life care for people with life-limiting illnesses.
