Australia Zoo

Thank you for expressing your interest in the Australia Zoo Volunteer Program. Each year a team of dedicated and passionate volunteers lend their time and efforts, to help Australia Zoo maintain its high standard of animal care and customer service, as well as to help us spread our message for animal conservation.

Our Australia Zoo volunteer program options include:

  • Animal Keeping Volunteers
  • Guest Experience Volunteers
You can find more information about what is involved within our different program options here on our website.
  • If you are interested in volunteering at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital please visit their website here for more information about how to apply.

Please note: we are unable to accommodate internships and clinical placements.

If travelling internationally and would like to better understand the type of Visa you will need to apply for, please visit the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs website here.

  • The application process can take a few weeks. For this reason, we ask that if you are already planning on travelling to Australia, you do not base your travel plans solely around being accepted into our volunteer program.
  • Due to visa and operational requirements, all international applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Please be advised, there is no guarantee that you will be successful in obtaining a volunteer placement upon submission of your application form and we advise against confirming travel arrangements prior to placement confirmation being received.

Please note: All volunteers are responsible for their own accommodation and transportation.

If you decide to apply, please complete all sections of the Australia Zoo Volunteer Program application form at your earliest convenience.

We are currently experiencing a high level of interest in our volunteer program and there is a waiting list of interested applicants.

Once your application has been reviewed the next step is an online interview.

Successful applicants will be offered a position and a probationary placement. Prior to your probationary period you will be invited to one of our induction sessions, which are held throughout the year. To ensure all successful applicants can gain an understanding of our volunteers' roles, as well as gain valuable knowledge and experience, volunteers are required to commit to completing 5 probationary shifts within one calendar month of their induction. Flexible rostering of these shifts can be discussed further at your interview and induction.

On completion of this probationary period and pending availability and the achievement of relevant performance requirements, opportunities may exist for an ongoing volunteer placement.

Our volunteer program is not designed to prepare people to enter the Zoo as employees, but rather an opportunity to gain a better understanding of what the industry is like. By completing the volunteer program there is no guarantee of employment at the end of your placement.

If you have any further questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We look forward to receiving your application!
