Housing & Residence Life / University of Pittsburgh - Johnstown - UPJ Real World Program Mentors

In conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown's RealWorld Action Plan the Office of Housing and Residence Life has created 10 RealWorld Interest Groups intended to provide students with an opportunity to create connections within the greater Johnstown community and to actively engage in the Pitt-Johnstown community. Each RealWorld Interest Group is centered on a common interest. Participants in a RealWorld Interest Group will be housed together in one of the five First-Year residence halls. In addition to the obvious social benefits, learning opportunities will exist centered around enhancing leadership skills, exploring career interests, exploring the personal interest, interacting with campus resources and events, and connecting with resources within the greater Johnstown community. Examples of these learning opportunities include service-learning projects, community service projects, career education sessions, leadership programs, off-campus trips and activities, and outreach experiences within the greater Johnstown community. The Office of Housing and Residence Life is seeking motivated individuals who are willing to align themselves with one RealWorld Interest Group and serve as a mentor for the students in that group. Ideally, the mentor should be involved in a career related to the interest, or someone who can provide a certain level of experience or expertise related to the interest. Serving as a mentor is an opportunity to participate in an innovative opportunity at Pitt-Johnstown and a positive way to interact with the future leaders of tomorrow. The commitment is between 2-4 hours a month and we are currently looking for mentors for the 2011-2012 Academic year to assist the Arts & Performance group, as well as Law & Society, and the Public Service and Government groups. Please contact Jesse Leonard at leoanrdj@pitt.edu for more information and details.
