Lyell McEwin Hospital - Comfort Care Program - Children's Ward/Women's Health Ward

CHILDREN'S WARD

In our busy hospital environment, nurses are often so busy performing clinical duties that other tasks such as play can be forgotten or are just not possible to fit in. A large proportion of our patients have families who are unable to stay with their child after admission due to work or family responsibilities they have caring for other children. A volunteer may be able to provide support to these families by settling and comforting babies or children when circumstances prevent parents staying with their child. They can also support staff and patients of Children’s ward by assisting in general duties within the ward including sorting, folding, restocking, organising, and disinfecting toys, donations and supplies, and welcoming and orientating families to the ward.

WOMEN'S HEALTH WARD

The birth of a new baby is an exciting time yet can be challenging for many families. For many different reasons, women may need additional support that their family may not be able to provide for example due to work commitments or other children.  A volunteer can provide support to women and their families by making them a fresh tea or coffee, offering to help settle or supervise a baby while a mother has a shower or help to collect belongings to enable them to take their baby home. Volunteers can also support staff and other patients of Women’s Health Unit by assisting in general duties in the ward.

  • When not directly interacting with the families and patients, volunteers will follow instructions of the Women’s Health Unit midwifery and nursing staff and complete tasks as required such as:
  • Answering the doorbell, ascertaining the correct visitors to patients, and facilitating entry,
  • Restocking of resource cupboards with stock from ward storeroom (nappies, wipe etc.)
  • Folding baby blankets
  • Discussing Child and Youth Health resources (Blue Book)
  • Supporting families on discharge, collecting belongings, and escorting to their car at Women’s Health Entrance.
  • Shifts:  7 days a week 10am - 2:00pm

Free onsite parking is available and all training provided.
