Lyell McEwin Hospital - Comfort Care Program - SCN

Having a baby in the Special Care Nursery can be a very distressing time for parents and families, length of stay can vary from weeks to months depending on illness or prematurity.    We understand that parents are unable to stay with their baby all the time as they have other family and work commitments or may reside in country areas.  The Comfort Program is a team of specifically trained volunteers who assist with settling and comforting babies within the Special Care Nursery when circumstances prevent parents staying with the child.

Comfort Program volunteers assist the staff in general administrative duties and ward duties of the Special Care Nursery.  The volunteers will also assist families and carers to ensure that visitors and family’s needs are met, and that the experience of visiting the ward is pleasant, efficient, and effective. Volunteers will ensure mums are offered something to drink and eat (when available) whilst visiting their babies.  Volunteers ensure visitors to the Special Care Nursery are met with a courteous, timely greeting and assess if appropriate to enter the ward.
