Communicable Disease

Disease surveillance is important to detect potential outbreaks of illness within Lake County Communicable Disease (CD) staff verify reports of diseases, outbreaks and conduct investigations on reportable diseases in Illinois.

The CD program serves as a resource for the general public, schools and day cares as well as community and medical entities regarding infectious diseases, infection control and prevention and pandemic preparedness. All reportable diseases in Illinois (except tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections) are reported to the CD program.​Programs and initiatives within CD exists around topics such as:

      • Outbreak vaccination programs (such as COVID-19 and Monkeypox)
      • Immunizations 
      • Sexually Transmitted Infection/HOV Prevention

Members of the Medical Reserve Corps were an invaluable asset during the COVID-19 pandemic response by assisting in the vaccination efforts of over 109,000 members of the community.  MRC volunteer duties included vaccinating and non-medical roles such as screening, translating, directing traffic, and answering calls at the call center.
