Richard Underwood Nature Refuge is managed in partnership with the Underwood family, who kindly offered part of their property as a second home to the northern hairy-nosed wombat.
In order to assist the Australian Wildlife Conservancy in managing the property, a Caretaker Program has been set up.

Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat –AWC/Brad Lue
The Caretaking Program requires two passionate people each month, to caretake at the refuge from January to December 2027.

You will be based at Richard Underwood Nature Refuge approximately one hour from St George or Surat and seven hours drive from Brisbane. Shared accommodation supplied.
The team is looking for at least two volunteers who are available for a minimum of 4 weeks or otherwise negotiated with Sanctuary managers.
Required skills:
- Basic maintenance to Wombat infrastructure (i.e. fences and water troughs)
- Cleaning and general maintenance to homestead and sheds
- Grounds keeping
- Weed removal which includes brush cutting.
Desired skills:
- Passion for conservation
- Strong safety culture
- Previous experience in small teams in remote locations
A volunteer stripend payment will be available at $80 per week per person.
The principle behind the management of wombats at Richard Underwood Nature Refuge is to exercise minimal disturbance and leave wombats free to go about their business.
It is a requirement to hold Current Senior First Aid & CPR Certificate is required for this position- AWC will assist volunteers with obtaining this if needed.
