Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary’s Art Projects 2026

Project Description and Dates

The operation team at Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary is currently seeking volunteers to design and help with art projects to help bring to life the walls, walk tracks and surrounds.

Opportunities for this position will run from 01/03/26 - 30/11/26availability for two weeks or more is highly favourable.

Volunteer tasks

Whether you are keen to create a sculpture out of scrap metal or cover a bare wall with prancing bilbies this is the place to do it. Feel free to have a chat with Sanctuary Manager Garth about your idea and how we can bring it to life here at Scotia.

Volunteering at Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary could be the perfect opportunity if you're passionate about conservation and art.

Whilst creating artwork, we encourage our volunteers to assist our Sanctuary Staff to complete their Land Management duties and see what living life on a sanctuary is all about.

When assisting in Land Management duties, volunteers will work as a team lead by the Project Coordinator and AWC Sanctuary staff to carry out tasks including:

  • Waterpoint fills and maintenance

  • Fence Checks

  • Utility checks

  • Incursion Camera Checks

  • On the ground problem solving

  • General House Paddock maintenance and repairs, including but not limited to, basic site inspections, structural reinforcement, cleaning, painting, plumbing, wall repairs etc

  • Road sign repairs

  • Track Clearing

  • Outdoors yard work, including manual weed removal

Things to be aware of when considering applying for this volunteer role/key requirements:

  • REMOTE WORK: We are a team of four. Our sanctuary is just under 65,000ha, and is 2.25hrs/180km from Mildura (nearest town). In some cases, there is the potential for working alone. If this is in anyway cause for concern for you, please consider carefully before accepting this role.

  • Manual Labour: tasks will require physical work including lifting and carrying objects, use of a wide range of tools, off-road drivingpotentially with trailers.

  • Volunteers must possess qualifications for the equipment they desire to use to create art (welding, brazing, etc)

  • Must undertake and adhere to site inductions from staff. All volunteers must read and abide by the AWC Code of Conduct and Volunteer Agreement before engaging in volunteer activities.

  • Undertake a 4x4 driving assessment from the Sanctuary Manager or an appropriate delegate prior to use of AWC vehicles.

  • Check the weather! Please be aware of the seasonal differences and pack accordingly. Our winter night temperatures go into the negatives, and while the sanctuary is closed to the public over the summer months, Autumn and Spring could still present days of 30 degrees Celsius and higher.

Please note: Please be aware of biosecurity measures before accessing Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary. All vehicles, Caravans, Camper trailers and anything else accompanying the vehicle must be thoroughly washed, and tyres checked for mud, weeds, prickles etc before travelling to the site. Also be aware of and check clothing and footwear that has the potential to transfer weed seeds and prickles.
