Title: Virtual ESL Volunteer

Department: Community Education

Reports to:  ESL Specialist, Volunteer Coordinator

Time Involvement: 5 Months (Jan-May 2024) ; 30-45 minutes/week

Summary: Jewish Family Services is currently running an online independent learning ESL program. We are looking for volunteers to video chat with a learner once each week (for 30-45 minutes) so that the users have a chance to practice the language they are learning in the program. The program will run from early January to the end of May.

Volunteers will have access to the learning program so that they can see the work the learners are completing and base their conversation time around that work. Volunteers will also have direct contact with JFS's Adult Education Specialist for guidance. Interested parties should have strong communication skills, and access to an online video conferencing software (FaceTime, Skype, ZOOM). Some experience with ESL would be great, but is not required.

Special Requirements: 

  • Statewide Central Registry Search
  • Age 18+ or youth consent form uploaded
  • Access to FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in education and/or ESL
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates compassion for refugees, patience, and the ability to operate from a mindset of cultural humility.
  • Multilingual is a plus!
