Volunteer Role

BAYLEAF Volunteers

Purpose of role

Volunteering from a building, and learning skills to do so, is a great way to help bring our buildings alive for visitors. In this role you will be making a valuable contribution to the overall visitor experience at the museum

Tasks you might be carrying out

You will be trained to share information about Bayleaf farmhouse with visitors of all ages. This covers the history of the house, its context and the social history of the time.

You will often have a simple skill that can be done whilst talking to people, which helps to explain the space.

Care for the items in the building and undertaking simple household tasks as cleaning, hanging out textiles etc. will be required as part of the role.

If you wish, we do encourage our volunteers to dress in historic clothing.

This role would be a great fit if you:

  • Enjoy speaking to small groups of all ages
  • Enjoy learning new skills
  • Have a keen interest in history and heritage
  • Are willing to get involved to inspire and delight our visitors

Considerations:

As we are an open air (outdoor) Museum some walking around the site is necessary. It can be cold in winter so we suggest layers to keep warm. The buildings do have fires which can become smoky.

Time Commitment:

This volunteer role is available 7 days a week and we are particularly looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one weekend day a month.

Ideally, volunteers will be available between 10.00am and 5.00pm however, we are happy to accommodate a morning or afternoon shift with notice.

We would greatly appreciate a time commitment of at least 3 hours at a time.

This role will be available on a rota and volunteers can sign up to volunteer once a week or once a month.

Training

We have a wide range of training to support our volunteers in offering an exceptional visitor experience.

During your induction you will be expected to attend the following training sessions:

  • The Museum in 2020
  • Fire lighting
  • Bayleaf, Winkhurst & Cowfold Training Sessions
