🧍Face to face - 🌟GOSH Nativity- Workshop at London Zoo

We're working with the GOSH Chaplaincy and Spiritual care team to co-produce a nativity play, celebrating the festive season in a meaningful and inclusive way.

The Nativity will be filmed in November, and then shown and streamed at the GOSH Carol Service in December. It will also be available to watch via the GOSH website, so if you can't make the carol concert, you'll still be able to see your work come to life!

What's the nativity?

The nativity is a Christian story from the bible. It is often performed as a school play around Christmas time.

The nativity tells the story of Mary and Joseph, and the birth of Jesus Christ. We've briefly explained the story at the end of this page, but don't worry if you're not familiar with it- we'll explain the story in the workshop.

You don't need to know the story, or have a faith to take part, just to know that it is a religious story and important to lots of families.

What will we be doing in this workshop?

The main workshop will run from 10am to 2pm.

We will based in a private classroom area of the zoo during this time, so there won't be too much walking/ wheeling around.

During the workshop, we will be exploring and shaping the script, costumes and music. We'll be getting you to:

  • Help shape our Nativity story. We want this to be a truly modern, GOSH nativity.
  • Design costumes for Mary, Joseph, our shepherd and kings, using some very interesting materials!
  • Sound track the journey to Bethlehem. What should our Nativity sound like? What would Mary or Joseph's playlist look like in the modern day?

After 2pm, we will be filming some short bits within the zoo, with some furry friends! If you'd like to take part, we'd love you to stay, to help us film a short clip (as a King or Shepherd). You can decide on the day if you'd like to take part in filming- no pressure.

Everyone who attends the workshop will also be given entry to London Zoo. The Zoo closes at 4pm, so you should have lots of time after the workshop to have a look around!

Who?

  • This workshop is for GOSH patients, siblings and families.
  • All ages welcome. If you are under 16, you must be accompanied by a parent or carer.
  • Everyone who is coming must sign up, so we know exactly who will be there.

When?

  • Friday 30 October, 10am to 2pm (during half term)
  • At ZSL London Zoo

The nativity story:

Mary and Joseph are a couple. They live in Nazareth.

One day, Mary is visited by an angel called Gabriel. Gabriel tells her she is going to have a special baby.

The Roman Emperor says everyone must return to the place they were born so they can be counted.

Even though Mary is pregnant, Mary and Joseph make the long journey to Bethlehem to be counted. They travel by donkey.

Once they arrive in Bethlemen, they look for somewhere to stay. All the inns (hotels) are full up. Eventually, an innkeeper agreed to let them use their stable.

In the stable, Mary gives birth to Jesus. Jesus is placed in a manger (a trough where horses or cows eat their hay).

Angels tell the local shepherds the good news, and they travel to visit the baby Jesus.

Later, the wise men follow a bright star to Bethlehem to see Jesus. They bring him special gifts, of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
