Volunteer Opportunities

Adoption Counselor

Objective:

Use open minded conversations to make long lasting matches between animals available for adoption and members of the community.

 

Duties:

Guide potential adopters around the adoption floor to view animals

Use open ended questions to identify possible matches and communicate all known information about candidates

Facilitate interactions between potential adopters and animals

Complete adoption paperwork

Educate and promote responsible pet ownership

Maintain cleanly living quarters for animals as needed

 

Qualifications:

Work well with people and animals

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

General knowledge of animal behavior and body language

Ability and willingness to learn ShelterBuddy adoption software

Must be able to take direction from staff regarding shelter protocols

 

Minimum Time Requirement:

6 month commitment:  Once a week for 2 hours

This requires a set schedule

Adoptions process

Ongoing one-on-one training with staff

Dog Walker

Objective:

Provide potty breaks and exercise the dogs in the adoption program to meet their basic needs and enhance their quality of life.

 

Duties:

Walk dogs or take them out in the yard
Pick up poop while outdoors and inside their kennels as needed

Socialize dogs inside during inclement weather

Mop kennels and interaction rooms as needed

 

Qualifications:

Excellent dog handling skills

Ability to read canine body language

Must be able to bend, squat, and safely handle dogs of varying sizes and strengths

Must be able to take direction from staff regarding shelter protocols

 

Minimum Time Requirement:

6 month commitment:  Once a week for 2 hours

This role requires a set schedule

 

Training Requirement:

4-6 hours of hands on training with staff

 

What To Expect:

The Dog Walker position is a functional role meant to provide outside time and regular potty breaks to the dogs at the shelter. 

A person taking on this role can expect to walk between 8 and 12 dogs during a 2 hour shift depending on the number of dogs in the shelter.

Dog walkers should be ready to spend much of their volunteer time outside, regardless of most weather conditions.  Accommodations are made for extreme weather.

Important:

  • This role is not available to those who need to complete required community service hours.  Community service volunteers may opt to stay on after their hours are complete and apply for this role at that time only.

Junior Enrichment Volunteer

Objective:

Provide potty breaks and additional enrichment for shelter dogs with greater socialization or exercise needs in order to improve their quality of life and mental wellbeing thereby increasing their adoptability.

Duties:

  • Follow and execute enrichment plans specifically designed for individual dogs
  • Enrichment may include: going for long walks, spending time exercising in the yard or multipurpose room, practicing basic manners training, puzzle games or treats, quiet one-on-one socialization, short off campus trips to parks, etc.
  • Track progress and changes in dog’s behavior or condition
  • Pick up poop while outdoors and inside kennels as needed
  • Mop kennels and interaction rooms as needed

 

Qualifications:

Preferred- previous experience working with dogs in some capacity outside of pet ownership

Must be 17 years or older to volunteer alone or 15 years with an adult

Must be able to physically manage large/strong dogs that pull, jump up, etc.

Must be able to take direction from staff regarding shelter protocols

Knowledge of and ability to read canine body language

Excellent communication skills

 

Minimum Time Requirement:

6 month commitment:  Once a week for 2 hours

This role requires a set schedule

 

Training Requirement:

4-6 hours of shelter animal handling training with staff

2 hour of basic enrichment training

*Optional* One-on-one deep dive training to work on a specific shelter behavior challenge

 

What To Expect:

A person taking on this role can expect to walk and handle 5 dogs during a 2 hour shift

Junior Enrichment Volunteers should be ready to spend some of their volunteer time outside, regardless of most weather conditions.

Humane Education Facilitator

Objective:

Provide on-site tours and presentations to groups of various ages and sizes in order to educate the community on topics related to Animal Welfare.

Duties:

  • Lead or assist another volunteer with group presentations
  • Lead or assist another volunteer with group tours of the adoption center

Qualifications:

  • Good communication and public speaking skills
  • Effective time management skills

Time Requirement:

  • This position is as needed.  Tours/presentations last 45 minutes-1 hour and take place any day of the week between 1-3pm.

Important:

  • This role is not available to those who need to complete required community service hours.  Community service volunteers may opt to stay on after their hours are complete and apply for this role at that time only.

Cat Companion

Objective:

Socialize cats in the adoption program in order to enhance their quality of life as well as to keep their space clean and comfortable.

 

Duties:

Socialize cats in their condo, colony, or adoption interaction room

Clean and straighten cat condo or colony

Assist with general cleaning duties as needed

 

Qualifications:

Excellent cat handling skills

Ability to read feline body language

Must be able to take direction from staff regarding shelter protocols

 

Minimum Time Requirement:

4 month commitment: Once every other week for 2 hours

This role requires a set schedule

Training Requirement:

Learn cat companion routine from staff

Ongoing training as needed

Pawsitive Impact Project

Objective:

  • Provide excellent customer service during weekly program hours in order to provide pet owners access to preventative veterinary care and pet food/supplies when their financial situation makes it difficult to do so.

Duties:

  • Greet pet owners and direct them where to go based on their desired services
  • Assist staff with tracking usage of pet food and supply pantry during operating hours

 

Qualifications:

  • Great communication skills
  • Desire to contribute to a non-judgmental, compassion-based project that helps keep pets out of the shelter by providing pet owners access to resources

 

Minimum Time Requirement:

  • Once a month: 3 hour shifts
  • **Hours of operation are Wednesdays 1-4pm**
