Mentoring is statistically our most impactful volunteer role, providing both academic and emotional support to students in need. Studies have shown that students engaged in a high quality mentoring relationship are less likely to initiate drug or alcohol use, engage in physical confrontation, and/or struggle with truancy, while being more likely to achieve higher grades, exhibit academic and emotional confidence, engage in positive relationships, and pursue post-secondary education.
Individual CISNT Mentors meet with one student once per week and provide support by simply walking along side them throughout their school year. These meetings take place the same and time each week to provide consistency to the often inconsistent lives of the children we work with.
We normally ask that Mentors commit to one hour each week for the duration of the school year, but this year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic this commitment may look a bit different. We are committed to keeping our students, staff, and volunteers safe, so all our volunteer opportunities will be virtual until our partnered districts and local health officials deem that it is safe for volunteers to return to our campuses. Virtual volunteering for Mentors will include at least one virtual call (through a platform like Zoom or WebEx) a month supplemented by email exchanges, phone calls, and other forms of remote contact on the weeks when the video calls do not take place.
If you would like to become a Mentor, you can begin by clicking on the Fill in an Application button to the right, creating a Better Impact account, and submitting our volunteer application!
Once this is done, view our New Volunteer Orientation modules in your Better Impact account. You can access these six modules by hovering your mouse over the My Profile tab on the right side of the home screen and clicking on Training in the dropdown menu that appears.
After completing the New Volunteer Orientation modules, we will have Sterling Volunteers send you an email invitation to submit your background check. This email will come from TheAdvocates@SterlingVolunteers.com.
Upon passing the background check, we will send you an email letting you know you are ready to being volunteering and introducing you to your Site Coordinator, the full-time CISNT employee who runs our programs on campus.
If you have any questions or need any help at any time, let us know! You can contact the CISNT Volunteer Department at email@example.com.
