Goal of the position
Music connects all people across generations, languages, and cultures. Our Music Therapist offers group sessions to each home area to build a strong community, engage the residents in social and emotion-based connections. Volunteers will support the larger group facilitation with the Music Therapist by helping to ensure that all residents can meaningfully engage and participate.
Time Commitment
Successful applicants in this position will be assigned to a specific home area program. These programs happen at a specific scheduled date and time with biweekly options. Volunteers for the Music Therapy Program can hold 2 roles with the music therapy program to increase commitment to weekly if desired.
Current day/time commitment opportunities
- Thursday mornings biweekly 9am-10:30am
- Monday mornings biweekly 9:30am-11am
- Tuesday afternoon biweekly 1:30pm-3pm (2 opportunities for biweekly or 1 opportunity for weekly)
Benefit to Volunteer
- Experience supporting those living with dementia and other cognitive/ physical decline.
- Experience supporting a group Music Therapy Session for residents with a diverse range of abilities.
- Gain an understanding of the Music Therapy approach.
Duties
- Escort residents to and from program space, this will include supporting residents utilizing wheelchairs and other mobility devices
- Support in program/space set up, including furniture set up, instrument distribution and other duties as required to support the program functioning.
- Participate in briefing and debriefing conversations with Music Therapist and other volunteers to evaluate resident’s needs and share feedback/experiences.
Qualifications
- Fluency in English required, Intermediate skills in other language considered in asset.
- Interest in Music, singing or instrument, is considered an asset.
