Animal Care

Volunteer Opportunities with Animal Care include:

Scrub (Cat, Dog, and SCA) - Everyone likes a clean house, including animals. This role works with AWLA’s Animal Care Technicians (ACTs) to provide daily housekeeping services (kennel scrub) and morning feeding for every animal at the shelter.  It’s dirty, smelly, physical work, but super-satisfying.  If order and tangible results make you happy, this is the volunteer assignment for you! (separate 'first shift' sign up option available)

Shifts scheduled: everyday from 8:30 to 11am

Teen SCA Scrub - This role is designed to give specific shifts to our teen volunteers. Everyone likes a clean house, including animals. This role works with AWLA’s Animal Care Technicians (ACTs) to provide daily housekeeping services (kennel scrub) and morning feeding for every animal at the shelter.

Shifts scheduled: Sat/Sun from 8:30 to 11am

Turn-down Service (Cat, Dog, and SCA) - Turn-down service is the end-of-day routine that prepares animals for a calm, comfortable night. It focuses on meeting basic needs—clean spaces, fresh food and water, and appropriate enrichment—while reducing noise and stimulation. The goal is to help animals settle, reduce stress, and ensure they are safe, secure, and ready to rest overnight.

Shifts scheduled: everyday between 7:30 - 9:30pm

Scrub Assistant - Dog - Scrub Assistant Volunteers complete all the tasks regular dog scrub volunteers do, except for moving the dogs from the kennel into the yards. Regular dog scrub required volunteers to complete dog handling training. This role allows you to help with dog scrub before you complete the training.

Shifts scheduled: everyday from 8:30 to 11am

Shelter Aid - Shelter Aid Volunteers support the day-to-day operations of the shelter by assisting with sorting in-kind donations, doing laundry, washing shelter animal food dishes, tidying the dog and cat enrichment stations, and any other special projects. Open to teens

Shifts scheduled: everyday from 9 to 11am and 6 to 8pm
