Citizen Science - Conservation Efforts - Fly-entists Bird Point Counts - in collaboration with the Cincinnati Zoo

Hi There,

Ever wondered what our feathered friends are up to? Now’s your chance to get involved in egg-citing hands-on conservation work! We’re looking for volunteers to assist with bird point counts in collaboration with Cincinnati Parks and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. You’ll help us gather data on bird species across some of Cincinnati's beautiful parks and contribute to important conservation efforts. Plus, you’ll get to explore nature and sharpen your bird-watching skills. It's a win-wing!

Here’s the scoop: You’ll sign up to participate in multiple 10-minute bird point counts at one of these parks:

CURRENT DATES SCHEDULED FOR POINT COUNTS:

  • Saturday, Oct 26 at REMS at 7:45am
  • Sunday, Oct 27 at Cali and Magrish at 7:45am
  • Monday, Oct 28 at Burnet at 7:45am

For these point counts, Kai will coordinate times that will work with all interested participants. There are lots of variables that need to be considered, including weather, etc.

Burnet Woods
California Woods and Magrish Preserve
Rawson Woods Nature Preserve, Edgewood Grove Park and Mt. Storm Park

Counts will take place between sunrise and around 10am. Not only will you be helping us keep an eye on the birds, but you’ll also be contributing to crucial conservation science and investigating how habitat restoration is affecting local wildlife.

Please email Kai.Davis@cincinnatizoo.org and let him know which location(s) you are interested in. He will respond with further information on the program.

Site Descriptions

Burnet Woods:
Burnet Woods will be the easiest point count opportunity in our study. There are 3 locations for point counts that are easily accessible and a few steps from where you can park your vehicle, or just off the street if you prefer to walk through the park. Plan accordingly and be prepared to spend at least about 45 minutes to an hour depending on your approach to reach each location. Be sure to wear proper shoes for walking/hiking and dress accordingly!
You will receive an email from kai.davis@cincinnatizoo.org to coordinate the date(s) that work best for you and the others in the group. Please be sure to check your email in the coming days!

California Woods and Magrish Preserve:
The combination of California Woods and Magrish is the most time-consuming point count opportunity in our study. There are 5 total locations for point counts, so there will be plenty of opportunities and plenty of time spent out. While this opportunity requires the most walking, steepest paths, most driving, it will also be the most immersive in terms of a hike and nature experience. Plan accordingly and be prepared to spend at least about an hour and a half to two hours doing these point counts and to be walking a lot on-trail and a good amount off-trail. Be sure to wear proper shoes for walking/hiking and dress accordingly!

R-E-M.S.:
The combination of Rawson Woods, Edgewood Grove, and Mt. Storm Park is the medium difficulty point count opportunity in our study. There are 4 locations for point counts that are all off-trail and may provide a bit of a challenge to navigate and walk through. There are plenty of available parking opportunities for each location you'll need to get to. Plan accordingly and be prepared to spend at least about an hour to an hour and a half doing these point counts and to be walking off-trail. Be sure to wear proper shoes for walking/hiking and dress accordingly!
