Arlington City Attorney’s Office Municipal Prosecution Internship/Externship



This is an unpaid internship opportunity.

The City of Arlington is offering an internship/externship opportunity in the Prosecution Division of the Arlington City Attorney’s Office.  This division represents the State of Texas and City of Arlington in prosecuting Class C fine-only misdemeanors and handling administrative hearings.  The student will gain valuable pre-trial and trial experience working with and assisting prosecutors in municipal court; and conducting legal research for municipal law and municipal prosecution issues.                                                         

Responsibilities:

  • Observe municipal court proceedings such as bench trials, jury trials, motion hearings and administrative hearings
  • Prosecute Class C fine-only misdemeanors in municipal court under the supervision of prosecutors through a State Bar of Texas Temporary Trial Card
  • Conduct legal research on various issues related to municipal law and municipal court prosecution,  and draft memoranda
  • Prepare cases for trial and interview witnesses
  • Handle legal projects from other divisions within the Arlington City Attorney’s Office as needed, e.g. Municipal Law, Litigation/Employment, Police Legal, etc. 

 

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Student must be a second year or third year law student at an accredited law school
  • Student must be eligible to obtain a State Bar of Texas Temporary Trial Card
  • Completion of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Evidence courses preferred, but not required

Additional Information

  • Student must be able to work a minimum of 8-10 hours per week but can work up to 20 hours per week for credit or non-credit.  It is preferred that the student work at least four (4) hours per day up to a maximum of 20 hours per week. 
  • It is recommended that the student consult with the Director of the Internship/Externship Program at the student’s law school prior to applying for the Arlington City Attorney’s Office Internship/Externship Program, especially if the student is seeking class credit.
