Garden and Property Crew Member

GOAL for this position:

As a Garden and Property Crew Member, your role will be to provide hands-on support to our busy animal centre, by performing periodic light maintenance, and regular upkeep of the gardens and lawns surrounding our animal centres.

The ripple effect of your role has a lasting effect, as a property that is kept in excellent condition demonstrates a professional and positive representation of our organization to the communities we serve.

Periodic maintenance costs less and ensures that our locations are damage-free and safe for our animals, staff, volunteers and the general public.

Although this role does not directly work with the animals, this role does contribute to their health and wellbeing. 

Volunteer Role:

  • Grass cutting / trimming / snow shoveling
  • Leaf removal
  • Maintaining gardens, plants, weeding
  • Litter and debris removal
  • Outdoor pen maintenance
  • Indoor maintenance such as light repairs and painting
  • Identify projects that require a higher skilled professional, crafts person

Skills Requirement:

  • Bending, walking, kneeling, reaching, along with occasional heavy lifting.
  • Experience operating lawn/snow equipment following safety guidelines.
  • Desire to learn more about animal sheltering and animal-friendly products, protocols.

 Time Commitment:

We recognize your time contribution to being a volunteer. Therefore, we support a customized approach to your schedule to best suit your availability. During our onboarding process, we will capture your time preferences and availability.  We are always looking for individuals who are dependable and responsible. This role is flexible, and can be performed any day of the week, however, seasonal weather such a snow removal is required with short notice.

Orientation and Training

Before you start your journey with us, our organization will provide you with the following training.

  • Infection control
  • Review of maintenance schedule and best practices and equipment
  • How to access our online community.

We will indicate which training will be required prior to your commencement, and which training we encourage you to participate in at your earliest convenience.

Supervision and Support

As a volunteer, you will be supported by animal centre staff. This staff partner will provide you with training for your specific role, your schedule, and any required feedback or updates. The Volunteer Development Team will always be available to offer support and guidance.  You will also have direct access to our online community, where you can find organizational updates, posted information and contact information for your staff partners.
