Collections Digitisation Volunteer

Collections Digitisation Volunteer

Help us prepare to move to the new museum!

We are looking for volunteers to assist with the digitisation of objects currently held in storage at the Museum of London. This will help us prepare the collection before the museum embarks on a major capital project to build a new museum in the historic West Smithfield market building and relocate the museum’s collections to this new space.

You will be:

  • Creating and editing digital images
  • Handling historic objects
  • Updating the collections database
  • Enhancing the digital assets for the new museum

We are looking for volunteers who can handle delicate objects with care and have an interest in photography. You will receive training in how to correctly handle museum objects and how to create and edit digital images.

As a volunteer you will gain skills and experience in object handling, photography and digital imaging. Working alongside museum staff and other volunteers you will gain team working skills as well as working independently. You will also have the opportunity to work with a large and varied collection of museum objects and learn more about the Museum of London.

Please note the deadline for applications is Friday 21 February 2020 at 9am.

An informal interview will take place on Friday 6 March 2020 for shortlisted applicants and training for the role will be confirmed at a later date.

Memories of London: Focus on Dementia Volunteer

Help the Museum of London to become more dementia-friendly

Do you have lived experience of dementia?

Do you want to share your views about how we can change as an organisation to become more dementia friendly?

We need your ideas and experience to expand our offer to become a more inclusive, welcoming and engaging museum for people living with dementia.

At the Museum of London we’re committed to understanding the barriers which some groups face when visiting cultural venues.

The Museum of London’s Memories of London Programme aims to use our rich collections to improve the wellbeing of people living with dementia and their carers and to make fundamental changes to our museum to make it as inclusive as possible. We would love your help and guidance to make this happen.

We are looking for volunteers with lived experience of dementia to help the Museum of London and Museum of London Docklands to achieve our aim of becoming more welcoming for this community. Volunteers living with a dementia diagnosis are welcome to volunteer as an individual or with a loved one or carer. Those with experience of caring for someone with dementia in the past or currently are also welcome individually.

Volunteers will receive relevant training related to the Museum of London and the Memories of London programme and support with any additional needs.

Through the role, you can hope to meet new people, share your experiences of living in London and get your creative juices flowing, while making a lasting impact by helping us to become a more dementia friendly organisation.

A full volunteer role description can be found here.

We Are London

At the Museum of London and the Museum of London Docklands, we connect people with the lived experience of London. The story we tell is one of place and people, evolving through interaction and exchange. We capture the capital’s complexity and contrasts through the London Collection. Through all our activities we contribute to London’s cultural, educational, international and economic impetus.

We summarise what we do in three words: We Are London. It is at once our aspiration and our mandate.
