1. DOGS: Large Breed Walking/Training
Dogs are social animals and require an abundance of interaction, especially in a shelter environment. This role provides walks/exercise, and work on basic obedience and manners skills to increase and maintain our dogs' adoptability. Experienced volunteers also work on behavior modification within our canine rehab program. Prospective volunteers must be steady on their feet and possess basic dog-handling skills, including the ability to securely and safely handle active, strong dogs. Willingness to pick up feces is required. Comfort with rowdy, and sometimes intimidating dogs is a plus!
Training depends upon your current skills, but is generally three 3-hour sessions with an existing volunteer or in small-groups, with a subsequent volunteering commitment of at least one 2.5-hour shift per week. Shift times generally begin at 8am, 10am, 2pm, and 4pm, but there is scheduling flexibility.
