ACUTE - CONSUMER SERVICES ATTENDANT FOR OPERATING THEATRE

Provide comfort, reassurance and practical, non-medical assistance to patients during their recovery journey. 

As a Consumer Services Volunteer in the Theatre/PACU area, you will support the Theatre team by assisting patients during the acute recovery phase and helping make their stay as comfortable as possible. Working alongside PACU nursing staff, you will provide practical support such as refreshments, comfort measures and assistance with discharge, allowing clinical staff to focus on the patient's overall care.

How you can help

  • Provide patients with refreshments such as sandwiches, tea and coffee.

  • Help ensure patients remain comfortable, including offering a warm blanket if they are feeling cold.

  • Maintain a clean, tidy and welcoming environment.

  • As directed by PACU staff, escort patients to the front door when they are ready for discharge.

  • Assist with other appropriate non-medical tasks within the Consumer Services Attendant scope of practice.

  • Work closely with PACU and Theatre staff to support the overall patient experience.

Training provided

Volunteers receive on-the-job training, along with any additional training required for the role, including:

  • Hand Hygiene – delivered online via Hand Hygiene Australia.

  • Safe Food Handling – delivered online via the Victorian Department of Health.

When you can volunteer

  • Theatre sessions, with hours negotiated to reflect the length of the session.

  • Availability is negotiated with the Nursing Unit Manager and Volunteer Coordinator.

Where you can volunteer

  • Theatre/PACU, Mansfield District Hospital.

Supervision and support

Volunteers are supported by the Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) and Theatre/PACU staff while performing their duties. Volunteers will receive ongoing guidance and support to ensure they are comfortable and confident in their role.
