Youth & Senior Services - Nature Connect Ambassador - 55+ Walking Group

Position Purpose / Goals

  • Support social connections and community engagement among seniors through outdoor activities.

  • Assist Township staff and service providers in delivering Nature Connect programs.

  • Help promote community health, safety, and engagement.

  • Encourage participation from equity-deserving groups, including rural, low-income, and socially isolated seniors.

  • Support seniors in exploring and appreciating the Township’s diverse parks, trails, forests, and beaches.


Tasks / Outline of Responsibilities

  • Assist Township staff during Outdoor Adventure Excursions and the Slow Sensory Walking Program.

  • Greet participants, help create a welcoming atmosphere, and encourage light engagement.

  • Provide general support to ensure activities are safe and inclusive.

  • Assist with event setup and light organization of equipment as directed.

  • Share participant feedback with Township staff.


Time Commitment Expected / Length of Appointment

  • Commitment of approximately 2–3 hours per month, including program delivery and occasional planning check-ins.

  • Volunteer term runs for the duration of the Nature Connect program (Fall 2025–Spring 2026).

  • Attendance at a short orientation session prior to program start is required.


Location

  • Various community parks, trails, beaches, and facilities.


Supervisor/Contact Person

  • Recreation Services Coordinator and/or designate.


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for the outdoors, active living, and community connection.

  • Friendly and inclusive approach when working with diverse groups of seniors.

  • Comfortable being outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to encourage participation.

  • Must complete a background check and wear Township attire.

  • Previous experience supporting group activities is an asset but not required.


Working Conditions/Accessibility

  • Activities take place outdoors in various locations across the Township.

  • Volunteers should be prepared for varying weather conditions and light physical activity.

  • Health and safety protocols to be followed.

  • Accessibility needs will be accommodated where possible.


Level of Risk

  • Medium to high risk.

  • Volunteer works with older adults/vulnerable populations, under Township staff supervision.

  • No cash handling; possible access to confidential participant information.


Screening, Orientation and Training

  • Volunteer Agreement & Waiver.

  • Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).

  • Orientation & Handbook Review.

  • Health & Safety, Accessibility, and Job-Specific Training.

  • Training may include select components from Standard First Aid & CPR-C or Urban Poling Instructor Course as relevant to the role.
