Programmatic - Electronics/Coding Program Assistant [March-April 2026]

Do you have experience with Arduinos or Raspberry Pis and electronics? Program in C++ [Arduino programming language] and help students learn electronics! San José Public Library is looking for future engineers and coders to assist with electronics and coding programs.

How You Will Make a Difference
Volunteers help connect youth and adults with expert knowledge on their preferred coding language. You will be helping the San José community learn a new and in-demand skill set by providing lesson plans and virtual instruction. Classroom management experience is a plus, but volunteers will be trained in this area by library staff.
Volunteers are needed to:
- Follow pre-made lesson plans
- Work with a library staff to review lesson plans and manage participants
- Have basic skills for conducting in-person meetings with SJPL staff support
- assist attendees with circuits, projects, and coding

Commitment/Schedule
Willingness to volunteer at least once a week for a 4 week duration.
- Assist with a 4 week electronics program for seven (7) ages10+ students using Arduino Starter Kits.
- Time commitment: 2.5 hours/week [30minutes before, 1.5 hr. for program, 30minutes after], If you can't volunteer the whole time, that is fine. Work with me help where you can! You can even come in when available and pre-code the arduinos and not even participate in the actual class.
Prospective volunteers should:
- Be comfortable with electronics/coding or have a willingness to learn the curricula which is beginner friendly
- Have experience or comfort with working with people of varying ages, backgrounds and skill levels
- Review course materials prior to class meeting
- Have strong oral communication skills. Bilingual skills desired
- Complete a fingerprint background check, at no cost to you. Only required if you are 18 years or older
Language Skills
- Bilingual skills are highly desired, but not required
