What can I do to help?

Community Events

Help spread the word about Tanglewood while in our Community! We get invited to hundreds of events a year but can only attend the ones that our volunteers can make it to!

  • Attend events like festivals and gatherings 
  • Bring animals to become the most popular booth at the event.
  • Take along advertising and flyers on what's happening at Tanglewood
  • Run activities and provide quick education for children attending festivals

** This position is great for someone who doesn't have availability during our normal operating hours as it often happens on weekends or in the evenings**

Education

Help with our educational programming!

  • Teach/ assist with Field Trips
  • Hold an "education station" with an animal ambassador
  • Provide feedback on educational programs 
  • Help with set up/ tear down of programs. 

We most need assistant-educator help March through June, Tuesday-Friday between 9-11:30am

Education Stations volunteers happen year round! 

Saturday Front Desk/ Greeter

Saturday's can be one of our busiest days with birthday parties and programming! Having an extra person really helps us out!

  • Run the gift shop when needed by cashing out visitors 
  • Answer visitor questions about animals, rentals, and the trails (all answers provided to you!)
  • Answer the phone
  • Greet visitors as they stop in

Animal Care

Help care for over 40 different types of animals that call Tanglewood home! 

  • Feed and water animals daily
  • Clean animal enclosures 
  • Provide animal socialization 
  • Any other tasks determined by the Curator of animals 

Trail Stewardship

Help care for over 10 miles of trails!

  • Hike the trails often to survey conditions
  • Trim branches 
  • Help remove fallen trees
  • Blaze Trails
  • Any other projects given by the Volunteer Coordinator

**This is a good option for people who like to work independently and want a flexible volunteering schedule as you do this job on your own and report back to the Volunteer Coordinator***

Office Mailings

Help us send out any large mailings (including postcards, newsletters, and events flyers) to our members and the community. 

-Fold and stuff envelopes

- Seal envelopes

-Keep mailings organized 

 

**Please note that this job happens a few times a year and can be sporadic-Volunteer Coordinator will be contact with those who have interest in this job*** 

 

Environmental Education

Candidates should be an undergraduate working towards a degree in environmental science or studies, ecology, biology, education, or another closely related field. Experience or interest in education, and strong oral communication skills preferred. Position involves assisting with field trips, summer education workshops and programs, as well as guided tours and hikes. 

Animal Care and Museum Curator

Candidate should be an undergraduate with experience in handling and caring for mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and/or raptors. A background in environmental science or studies, ecology, biology, or other closely related field is preferred. Candidate must be self-directed and highly motivated. This position has duties including cleaning, maintaining and designing museum exhibit areas, feeding and healthcare for animals, and handling/ socializing animals. 

Non-Profit Management

Candidate should be an undergraduate with an interest in nonprofit management. Candidate must have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency with Windows, Word, Adobe, html preferred. This position involves assisting our staff with marketing, social media, fundraising and event planning, operating the gift shop and aiding visitors.
