Volunteers provide client support in a community exercise setting. Registered volunteers are trained to assist clients with an exercise program set up by an Exercise Therapist and a Physiotherapist to improve overall fitness and quality of life. The NEXT Program is part of the Live Well community exercise programs, developed in partnership with Rehab Outpatient Specialized Services at Saskatoon City Hospital. Participants and their support people exercise in a structured environment two times a week, monitored by physical and exercise therapists. Volunteers may assist clients one-on-one or support the therapists.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Assist clients with coats/shoes
- Adjust exercise equipment as needed
- Support SHA staff (e.g., guiding wheelchairs or assisting clients walking)
- Help with completion of exercise logs
- Encourage social interaction
- Assist with wiping down equipment
- Wayfinding support from front door to upstairs, if needed
End-of-day communication provides a safety debriefing opportunity. Orientation to equipment and communication techniques will be provided on-site. Preferred qualifications include an interest in healthcare and exercise, with a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology. Volunteers must meet the physical demands of the role, including pushing wheelchairs, assisting clients with walkers, and helping set up equipment.
