Second World War & Exeter Blitz Gallery Interpretation

Would you like to be a Second World War & Exeter Blitz gallery interpretation volunteer?

Introduction

Would you like to help visitors connect with Exeter’s wartime history?

Join us as a Second World War & Exeter Blitz Gallery Interpretation Volunteer, where you’ll bring stories of resilience, community and conflict to life through real objects and powerful narratives.

RAMM’s Second World War collection—housed in our local history gallery—explores the impact of the Blitz on Exeter and the experience of life during wartime. Twice a month, we offer visitors the chance to handle authentic and replica objects, and our volunteers play a vital role in making these encounters meaningful, accessible and engaging.

About the Role

As a Gallery Interpretation Volunteer, you will:

  • Welcome drop‑in visitors to the Second World War handling collection.
  • Share information about the objects, the Exeter Blitz, and life in Devon during the war.
  • Support individuals, families and small groups in exploring history through hands‑on engagement.
  • Help create a friendly, inclusive and safe environment within the gallery.
  • Assist visitor services staff by reporting any incidents or issues, and by helping guide the public during evacuations (final checks are completed by staff).

This opportunity is suitable for volunteers aged 18+.

Local college students are welcome to apply but should be able to commit to at least two academic terms and be at least 18 years of age. If you are a university student who is heading home for the April Easter break, we would recommend that you hold off applying until you return in September 2026 as there will be insufficient time before then to recruit and train you.

When and What’s Involved

  • Time Commitment:
A minimum of 2.5 hours once a month, with flexibility for holidays and other commitments.

  • Shift Scheduling:
Shifts are usually offered 2–3 months in advance.
    Most sessions take place on:

    • The second Tuesday of each month, and
    • The last Wednesday of each month,
with occasional variations during school holidays to support family learning.
  • Visitor Experience:
During school half‑term sessions, RAMM also hosts the 307 Polish Squadron Project display—a tribute to the Polish night‑fighter squadron who defended Exeter during the Blitz—adding another rich layer to the visitor experience.

Skills & Personal Qualities

You will enjoy this role if you:

  • Have an interest in museums and the Second World War
  • Are willing to learn and enjoy sharing information with others
  • Are friendly, approachable and confident communicating with the public
  • Work well as part of a team
  • Present a smart and welcoming appearance

Previous customer‑facing experience is helpful but not essential.

Accessibility & Support

Most of the gallery handling experience is fully accessible. The air‑raid shelter area has restricted access, and some visitors may choose not to enter—training will prepare you to guide them confidently.

If you require adjustments during the recruitment or induction process, we are happy to support you.
