The role of Visitor Survey Volunteer involves encouraging visitors to complete a short survey about their visit to the museum. As an Arts Council England national portfolio funded organisation, RAMM is required to report on the inclusivity and diversity of its visitors as well as the impact and insights into a number of its exhibitions. This role is available to anyone who is at least 15 years of age. The role is also suitable to fulfil the Volunteering section of a Duke of Edinburgh Award.

When and What
The time commitment for this volunteer role is 2 hours fortnightly (once a week is preferable) with allowances for holidays and other responsibilities. You will be able to choose your attendance dates up to four weeks in advance on iVolunteer, with the option to choose the same shift every week or vary them. During your volunteering, you will talk to visitors who have just visited an exhibition or the museum in general to encourage them to complete a short survey of their experience. You will use an iPad to collect the visitor’s answers.
The available two hour shifts start on Tuesdays: 10:30, 12:30 or 14:30, Thursdays 12:30, Fridays 12:30 or 14:30, Saturdays 12:30 or 14:40 or Sundays: 10:30, 12:30 or 14:30. The museum is closed on Mondays.
We ask that you are able to commit to this role for a minimum period of six months.
Training
It is important that you attend training for this role before you can start. The required training includes three parts:
- A one-hour online induction which includes a multiple-choice quiz to check that your training has been successful.
- A 30-minute Safeguarding online training module.
- A 45-minute orientation of the museum, including information on what to expect from visitors followed by 45 minutes of role-specific training and an opportunity to ask questions.
Skills and Assistance
Although you are not responsible for security in the museum, you will be expected to alert visitor service staff when incidents or issues arise. The role also includes assisting with the evacuation of galleries and public spaces as you leave the building. Visitor service staff are responsible for final searches and ensuring the building is clear. You should have a broad interest in museum collections and exhibits, with a willingness to learn, an ability to communicate clearly with the public, and the capacity to work independently. A smart appearance is required.
Future Reference Requests
If you are considering asking us to provide you with a character reference in the future, we require you to complete a minimum of 30 hours of volunteering so that we are in a position to give you a balanced and informed reference.
