San Dieguito County Park is by the ocean in Del Mar. You can enjoy many fun activities. There are trails, playgrounds, a baseball field, and a basketball court. The park also has a wedding gazebo, pavilions, picnic areas, and BBQs. Restrooms are available. Some amenities need a reservation.
Discover beautiful views from Activity Hill! It has 10 fitness stations, three hillside ladders, lookout platforms, and two suspension bridges. It also has two TRACK Trails for kids with nature scavenger hunts where you can win prizes online. From the hill, you can see the coast and miles of north county communities. Below, you'll see large open lawns with trees and two peaceful duck ponds.
Before Spanish settlers came, the land was home to the Kumeyaay Native Americans. During the Spanish period, the park land was used as a “Rancheria” by the padres of the San Diego Mission. They used it for grazing cattle. Ten years after Mexico gained independence from Spain, Librado Silva received a land grant for Rancho San Dieguito. He built the first adobe there in 1831.
Later, Juan Maria Osuna was given the land and raised horses and cattle. His original adobe was restored and is now part of the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. In 1954, 100 acres of land was donated to the County of San Diego by the Rancho Santa Fe Irrigation District. This land became the park we enjoy today. The upper park opened in 1965, and the lower park opened in 1977.
