Empowering food insecure Albertans to procure healthful foods through a subsidized food prescription program
Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary
Researchers at the University of Calgary are developing a food prescription program for adults with Type 2 diabetes, to be delivered in a primary care setting. For 6 months this program will provide food insecure adults who have Type 2 diabetes with $5/household member/week to purchase healthy foods in a supermarket.
Food insecurity is defined as someone who answers yes to one or both of the following questions:
- Within the past 6 months we were worried whether our food would run out before we got money to buy more;
- Within the past 6 months the food we bought just didn’t last and we didn’t have money to buy more.
This project is looking for 1-2 patient partners to provide input and advice on the research project design so the food prescription program can best help food insecure adults with Type 2 diabetes manage their diabetes.
Roles and Responsibilities
We are seeking 1-2 adults who can answer yes to one or both of the above questions and who have Type 2 diabetes. You would be expected to meet with us 2-3 times in July and August for 1 hour each time to offer feedback and input on the design of the research project. This will help us develop the most appropriate and beneficial food prescription program for adults with Type 2 diabetes.
With your input, we can start breaking down barriers to healthful food security for those adults with Type 2 diabetes!
There will be 2-3 meetings in July and August 2019. These meetings will be 1 hour long and will be held at the Foothills campus at the University of Calgary. Teleconferencing in can be an option but attending one in-person meeting is preferred.
Our grant is currently Stage 1. If our grant is accepted to proceed to Stage 2 then 2-3 additional meetings of 1 hour each will be scheduled in October and November 2019.
You will be reimbursed for travel expenses and given an honorarium valued at $25/hour.
