The Zara Clark Museum at historic Charters Towers has an impressive collection of photographs, artefacts and heritage machinery, where visitors can learn about gold history and all the stories of this regional town that will intrigue everyone from history buffs to young children. 

 

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING?

 

Our passionate volunteers relay the stories of what life was like in Charters Towers when 15,000 soldiers were based there during WWI and WWII. 

 

Escort and entrance our visitors as they tour through the displays featuring agricultural, mining and medical equipment, some of it still in working order.

 

We are looking for individuals with a happy disposition who are passionate about providing an unforgettable customer experience and making a meaningful contribution to this important heritage asset.

JOINING THE PROGRAM - COSTS AND BENEFITS 

The NTAQ Heritage Volunteer program is free to join. In fact, we want to reward you, as a valued volunteer!


There is a one-month trial period for you to decide whether you would like to continue volunteering and we assess your fit with our program. At the end of this trial period, you become an approved volunteer. We hope you will stay as a member of this program for a minimum of six months.

 

As an approved NTAQ volunteer you receive:

  1. A NTAQ name badge.
  2. A NTAQ TEAM MEMBER Card allowing free entry to any National Trust Queensland property for the volunteer and up to 4 accompanying guests at each visit. 
  3. National Trust Queensland newsletters.
  4. Invitations to National Trust Queensland events.
  5. Team member discounts on food and beverage, retail, and Wildlife Experiences when visiting Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
  6. A 50% discount to National Trust Memberships.

Museum Tour Guide

 

 

Museum Tour Guide Volunteers welcome guests from diverse backgrounds, answer questions about the Museum and conduct tours to share the history of the collection. The primary aim is to ensure guests to get the maximum enjoyment possible from their visit.

To undertake this role, you should have high level interpersonal and communication skills, a warm and welcoming nature, and be able to work both independently and in a team environment. 

 

WHAT ARE THE TASKS?

  • Work as part of a small team of friendly Tour Guides, to provide short tours for our visitors, to showcase the collection, share stories and provide general information about Charters Towers.
  • Answer guest queries using fact sheets and training materials provided,
  • Perform Front of House duties, including ticket sales through our Point-of-Sale system,
  • Answer general enquiries about guests’ visits, including direction to facilities and information about the region.
  • Communicate the vibrant history of the area, which may include First Nations histories. 
  • Communicate clearly with the Heritage Site Coordinator and NTAQ staff about potential issues, hazards, disruptions to guest experiences, or risk to the property or collection.
  • We may also request that you assist with other duties such as may be require such as tidying, and other light duties and selected administrative tasks.

 

WHAT SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS DO I NEED?

  • Be comfortable with talking to people from all walks of life in a friendly and welcoming manner, treating everyone with respect and politeness,
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
  • Be physically able to perform the role outlined, or communicate useful accommodations and adjustments to the Heritage Site Coordinator
  • Demonstrate a willingness to adapt, to adhere to new policies and procedures, and undertake any associated training,
  • Agree to comply with all company policies and procedures,
  • Have basic computer literacy and agree to regularly access email communications from NTAQ.
  • Be committed to represent the values and support the causes of the NTAQ.

 

WHEN CAN I VOLUNTEER?

Ideally, we request a commitment of one shift per shift each week, subject to operational requirements. Induction and training will be provided. Your friendly Site Coordinator will be able to provide more details. 

 

 

Collection Care Volunteer

Collection Care Volunteers are involved with caring for the Zara Clark Museum collection items, ensuring they are cleaned, and presented appropriately and reporting any damage or theft to our collection.

If you are a person who is interested to learn more about the heritage of early Charters Towers, who enjoys working independently and also in a team environment, please apply for this role.

WHAT ARE THE TASKS?

  • Working as part of the friendly Collection Care team, your duties will involve ensuring the Museum and its special collection are presented at their best; being clean and tidy, engaging and interesting.
  • Assisting with housekeeping of the Museum and the collection, cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, window cleaning when required etc. 
  • You will be provided with training to assist you with collection care duties.
  • In this interesting role, you will be a true all-rounder.  We may request that you help out with other duties around the Museum as may be required, assisting with duties such as guest service, educational activities, general cleanliness and tidiness and other tasks.

WHAT SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS DO I NEED?

  • An interest in learning more about the heritage of this extensive historical collection and the stories of past ways of life.
  • A flexible and positive attitude, willing to chip in and assist as may be required to help your colleagues.
  • Physically capable.
  • Ability to clean, dust, vacuum and polish and overall general good housekeeping skills.
  • Agree to comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Have basic computer literacy to use the Volunteer software, and agree to regularly access email communications from NTAQ.
  • Be committed to delivering the values and supporting the causes of NTAQ.

WHEN CAN I VOLUNTEER?

Maintenance Helper Volunteer

Maintenance Helpers are volunteers who enjoy assisting with basic property maintenance and collection care.

 If you are person who is handy and loves to fix things so they look and work well, and you can work independently as well as in a team environment, then please apply for this role. We would love to have you join our team of amazing volunteers.

WHAT ARE THE TASKS?

  • Working as part of a team of friendly volunteers, you will be able to undertake a variety of general property maintenance tasks such as touch up painting, minor timber repairs, picture hanging, rubbish removal etc.
  • Maintain respect for the historic nature of the Museum premises and its collection.
  • You will be provided with assistance and information to enable you to complete necessary tasks that are within your ability and comfort zone. 
  • We may also request that you help out with other duties around the property as may be required, assisting with general tidiness and other tasks.

 WHAT SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS DO I NEED?

  • Basic handyman skills and ability to work with tools provided -  any further qualifications would be very welcome -carpentry or building experience.
  • A flexible and positive attitude, willing to chip in and assist as may be required to help your colleagues.
  • Be physically capable and be a person committed to safety.
  • Agree to comply with all company policies and procedures and willingly follow instructions from NTAQ staff.
  • Have basic computer literacy to use the Volunteer software, and agree to regularly access email communications from NTAQ.
  • Be committed to deliver the values and support the causes of NTAQ.
